Therefore, I exhort the elders among you, as your fellow elder and witness of the sufferings of Christ, and a partaker also of the glory that is to be revealed, | 1Therefore, as a fellow elder and witness to the sufferings of the Messiah and also a participant in the glory about to be revealed, I exhort the elders among you: |
shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of God; and not for sordid gain, but with eagerness; | 2Shepherd God's flock among you, not overseeing out of compulsion but freely, according to God's will; not for the money but eagerly; |
nor yet as lording it over those allotted to your charge, but proving to be examples to the flock. | 3not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. |
And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. | 4And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. |
You younger men, likewise, be subject to your elders; and all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE. | 5In the same way, you younger men, be subject to the elders. And all of you clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. |
Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, | 6Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that He may exalt you at the proper time, |
casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you. | 7casting all your care on Him, because He cares about you. |
Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. | 8Be serious! Be alert! Your adversary the Devil is prowling around like a roaring lion, looking for anyone he can devour. |
But resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world. | 9Resist him and be firm in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are being experienced by your fellow believers throughout the world. |
After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you. | 10Now the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ Jesus, will personally restore, establish, strengthen, and support you after you have suffered a little. |
To Him be dominion forever and ever. Amen. | 11The dominion belongs to Him forever. Amen. |
Through Silvanus, our faithful brother (for so I regard him), I have written to you briefly, exhorting and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it! | 12I have written you this brief letter through Silvanus (I know him to be a faithful brother) to encourage you and to testify that this is the true grace of God. Take your stand in it! |
She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you greetings, and so does my son, Mark. | 13The church in Babylon, also chosen, sends you greetings, as does Mark, my son. |
Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace be to you all who are in Christ. | 14Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to all of you who are in Christ. |
