Therefore, I exhort the elders among you, as your fellow elder and witness of the sufferings of Christ, and a partaker also of the glory that is to be revealed,1So as your fellow elder and a witness of Christ's sufferings and as one who shares in the glory that will be revealed, I urge the elders among you:
shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of God; and not for sordid gain, but with eagerness;2Give a shepherd's care to God's flock among you, exercising oversight not merely as a duty but willingly under God's direction, not for shameful profit but eagerly.
nor yet as lording it over those allotted to your charge, but proving to be examples to the flock.3And do not lord it over those entrusted to you, but be examples to the flock.
And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.4Then when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that never fades away.
You younger men, likewise, be subject to your elders; and all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE.5In the same way, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. And all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.
Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time,6And God will exalt you in due time, if you humble yourselves under his mighty hand
casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.7by casting all your cares on him because he cares for you.
Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.8Be sober and alert. Your enemy the devil, like a roaring lion, is on the prowl looking for someone to devour.
But resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world.9Resist him, strong in your faith, because you know that your brothers and sisters throughout the world are enduring the same kinds of suffering.
After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you.10And, after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace who called you to his eternal glory in Christ will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.
To Him be dominion forever and ever. Amen.11To him belongs the power forever. Amen.
Through Silvanus, our faithful brother (for so I regard him), I have written to you briefly, exhorting and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it!12Through Silvanus, whom I know to be a faithful brother, I have written to you briefly, in order to encourage you and testify that this is the true grace of God. Stand fast in it.
She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you greetings, and so does my son, Mark.13The church in Babylon, chosen together with you, greets you, and so does Mark, my son.
Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace be to you all who are in Christ.14Greet one another with a loving kiss. Peace to all of you who are in Christ.
