Now the LORD said to Abram, "Go forth from your country, And from your relatives And from your father's house, To the land which I will show you;1The LORD told Abram, "You are to leave your land, your relatives, and your father's house and go to the land that I'm going to show you.
And I will make you a great nation, And I will bless you, And make your name great; And so you shall be a blessing;2I'll make a great nation of your descendants, I'll bless you, and I'll make your reputation great, so that you will be a blessing.
And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed."3I'll bless those who bless you, but I'll curse the one who curses you, and through you all the people of the earth will be blessed."
So Abram went forth as the LORD had spoken to him; and Lot went with him. Now Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.4So Abram left there, as the LORD had directed him, and Lot accompanied him. Abram was 75 years old when he left Haran.
Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his nephew, and all their possessions which they had accumulated, and the persons which they had acquired in Haran, and they set out for the land of Canaan; thus they came to the land of Canaan.5Abram took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated, and the servants he had acquired while living in Haran. Then they set out to go to the land of Canaan. When they arrived in the land of Canaan,
Abram passed through the land as far as the site of Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. Now the Canaanite was then in the land.6Abram traveled through the land to the place called Shechem, as far as the oak of Moreh. At that time the Canaanites were in the land.
The LORD appeared to Abram and said, "To your descendants I will give this land." So he built an altar there to the LORD who had appeared to him.7Then the LORD appeared to Abram and said, "I'll give this land to your descendants." So Abram built an altar to the LORD, who had appeared to him.
Then he proceeded from there to the mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; and there he built an altar to the LORD and called upon the name of the LORD.8From there Abram traveled on to the hill country east of Bethel and set up his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. There he built an altar to the LORD and called on the name of the LORD.
Abram journeyed on, continuing toward the Negev.9Then Abram traveled on, continuing into the Negev.
Now there was a famine in the land; so Abram went down to Egypt to sojourn there, for the famine was severe in the land.10There was a famine in the land, so Abram went down to Egypt to live because the famine was so severe.
It came about when he came near to Egypt, that he said to Sarai his wife, "See now, I know that you are a beautiful woman;11When he was about to enter Egypt, he told his wife Sarai, "Look, I'm aware that you're a beautiful woman.
and when the Egyptians see you, they will say, 'This is his wife'; and they will kill me, but they will let you live.12When the Egyptians see you, they will say, 'She is his wife.' Then they'll kill me, but allow you to live.
"Please say that you are my sister so that it may go well with me because of you, and that I may live on account of you."13Please say that you are my sister, so things will go well for me for your sake. That way, you'll be saving my life."
It came about when Abram came into Egypt, the Egyptians saw that the woman was very beautiful.14As Abram was entering Egypt, the Egyptians noticed how beautiful Sarai was.
Pharaoh's officials saw her and praised her to Pharaoh; and the woman was taken into Pharaoh's house.15When Pharaoh's officials saw her, they brought her to the attention of Pharaoh and took the woman to Pharaoh's palace.
Therefore he treated Abram well for her sake; and gave him sheep and oxen and donkeys and male and female servants and female donkeys and camels.16He treated Abram well because of her, so Abram acquired sheep, oxen, male and female donkeys, male and female servants, and camels.
But the LORD struck Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram's wife.17But the LORD afflicted Pharaoh and his household with severe plagues because of Sarai, Abram's wife.
Then Pharaoh called Abram and said, "What is this you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife?18Pharaoh summoned Abram and asked, "What have you done to me! Why didn't you tell me that she was your wife?
"Why did you say, 'She is my sister,' so that I took her for my wife? Now then, here is your wife, take her and go."19Why did you say, 'She is my sister,' so that I took her as a wife for myself? Now, here is your wife! Take her and get out!"
Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him; and they escorted him away, with his wife and all that belonged to him.20So Pharaoh assigned men to Abram, and they escorted him, his wife, and all that he had out of the country.
