A song, a psalm written by the Korahites; for the music director; according to the machalath-leannoth style; a well-written song by Heman the Ezrachite. O LORD God who delivers me! By day I cry out and at night I pray before you. | 1O LORD, God of my salvation, I cry out day and night before you. |
Listen to my prayer! Pay attention to my cry for help! | 2Let my prayer come before you; incline your ear to my cry! |
For my life is filled with troubles and I am ready to enter Sheol. | 3For my soul is full of troubles, and my life draws near to Sheol. |
They treat me like those who descend into the grave. I am like a helpless man, | 4I am counted among those who go down to the pit; I am a man who has no strength, |
adrift among the dead, like corpses lying in the grave, whom you remember no more, and who are cut off from your power. | 5like one set loose among the dead, like the slain that lie in the grave, like those whom you remember no more, for they are cut off from your hand. |
You place me in the lowest regions of the pit, in the dark places, in the watery depths. | 6You have put me in the depths of the pit, in the regions dark and deep. |
Your anger bears down on me, and you overwhelm me with all your waves. (Selah) | 7Your wrath lies heavy upon me, and you overwhelm me with all your waves. Selah |
You cause those who know me to keep their distance; you make me an appalling sight to them. I am trapped and cannot get free. | 8You have caused my companions to shun me; you have made me a horror to them. I am shut in so that I cannot escape; |
My eyes grow weak because of oppression. I call out to you, O LORD, all day long; I spread out my hands in prayer to you. | 9my eye grows dim through sorrow. Every day I call upon you, O LORD; I spread out my hands to you. |
Do you accomplish amazing things for the dead? Do the departed spirits rise up and give you thanks? (Selah) | 10Do you work wonders for the dead? Do the departed rise up to praise you? Selah |
Is your loyal love proclaimed in the grave, or your faithfulness in the place of the dead? | 11Is your steadfast love declared in the grave, or your faithfulness in Abaddon? |
Are your amazing deeds experienced in the dark region, or your deliverance in the land of oblivion? | 12Are your wonders known in the darkness, or your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness? |
As for me, I cry out to you, O LORD; in the morning my prayer confronts you. | 13But I, O LORD, cry to you; in the morning my prayer comes before you. |
O LORD, why do you reject me, and pay no attention to me? | 14O LORD, why do you cast my soul away? Why do you hide your face from me? |
I am oppressed and have been on the verge of death since my youth. I have been subjected to your horrors and am numb with pain. | 15Afflicted and close to death from my youth up, I suffer your terrors; I am helpless. |
Your anger overwhelms me; your terrors destroy me. | 16Your wrath has swept over me; your dreadful assaults destroy me. |
They surround me like water all day long; they join forces and encircle me. | 17They surround me like a flood all day long; they close in on me together. |
You cause my friends and neighbors to keep their distance; those who know me leave me alone in the darkness. | 18You have caused my beloved and my friend to shun me; my companions have become darkness. |
