But understand this, that in the last days difficult times will come.1But know this: Difficult times will come in the last days.
For people will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy,2For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy,
unloving, irreconcilable, slanderers, without self-control, savage, opposed to what is good,3unloving, irreconcilable, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, without love for what is good,
treacherous, reckless, conceited, loving pleasure rather than loving God.4traitors, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,
They will maintain the outward appearance of religion but will have repudiated its power. So avoid people like these.5holding to the form of godliness but denying its power. Avoid these people!
For some of these insinuate themselves into households and captivate weak women who are overwhelmed with sins and led along by various passions.6For among them are those who worm their way into households and capture idle women burdened down with sins, led along by a variety of passions,
Such women are always seeking instruction, yet never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth.7always learning and never able to come to a knowledge of the truth.
And just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these people--who have warped minds and are disqualified in the faith--also oppose the truth.8Just as Jannes and Jambres resisted Moses, so these also resist the truth, men who are corrupt in mind, worthless in regard to the faith.
But they will not go much further, for their foolishness will be obvious to everyone, just like it was with Jannes and Jambres. 9But they will not make further progress, for their lack of understanding will be clear to all, as theirs was also.
You, however, have followed my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, my faith, my patience, my love, my endurance,10But you have followed my teaching, conduct, purpose, faith, patience, love, and endurance,
as well as the persecutions and sufferings that happened to me in Antioch, in Iconium, and in Lystra. I endured these persecutions and the Lord delivered me from them all.11along with the persecutions and sufferings that came to me in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra. What persecutions I endured! Yet the Lord rescued me from them all.
Now in fact all who want to live godly lives in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.12In fact, all those who want to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.
But evil people and charlatans will go from bad to worse, deceiving others and being deceived themselves.13Evil people and impostors will become worse, deceiving and being deceived.
You, however, must continue in the things you have learned and are confident about. You know who taught you14But as for you, continue in what you have learned and firmly believed. You know those who taught you,
and how from infancy you have known the holy writings, which are able to give you wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.15and you know that from childhood you have known the sacred Scriptures, which are able to give you wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
Every scripture is inspired by God and useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,16All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness,
that the person dedicated to God may be capable and equipped for every good work. 17so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
