| 1By the rivers of Babylon we sit down and weep when we remember Zion. | 1By the rivers of Babylon-- there we sat down and wept when we remembered Zion. |
| 2On the poplars in her midst we hang our harps, | 2There we hung up our lyres on the poplar trees, |
| 3for there our captors ask us to compose songs; those who mock us demand that we be happy, saying: "Sing for us a song about Zion!" | 3for our captors there asked us for songs, and our tormentors, for rejoicing:" Sing us one of the songs of Zion." |

| 8O daughter Babylon, soon to be devastated! How blessed will be the one who repays you for what you dished out to us! | 8Daughter Babylon, doomed to destruction, happy is the one who pays you back what you have done to us. |
