After this Paul departed from Athens and went to Corinth.1After this, Paul left Athens and went to Corinth.
There he found a Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had ordered all the Jews to depart from Rome. Paul approached them,2There he found a Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla because Claudius had ordered all the Jews to leave Rome. Paul went to visit them,
and because he worked at the same trade, he stayed with them and worked with them (for they were tentmakers by trade).3and because they had the same trade he stayed with them. They worked together because they were tentmakers by trade.
He addressed both Jews and Greeks in the synagogue every Sabbath, attempting to persuade them. 4Every Sabbath, he would speak in the synagogue, trying to persuade both Jews and Greeks.
Now when Silas and Timothy arrived from Macedonia, Paul became wholly absorbed with proclaiming the word, testifying to the Jews that Jesus was the Christ.5But when Silas and Timothy arrived from Macedonia, Paul devoted himself entirely to the word as he emphatically assured the Jews that Jesus is the Messiah.
When they opposed him and reviled him, he protested by shaking out his clothes and said to them, "Your blood be on your own heads! I am guiltless! From now on I will go to the Gentiles!"6But when they began to oppose him and insult him, he shook out his clothes in protest and told them, "Your blood be on your own heads! I am innocent. From now on I will go to the gentiles."
Then Paul left the synagogue and went to the house of a person named Titius Justus, a Gentile who worshiped God, whose house was next door to the synagogue.7Then he left that place and went to the home of a man named Titius Justus, who worshipped God and whose house was next door to the synagogue.
Crispus, the president of the synagogue, believed in the Lord together with his entire household, and many of the Corinthians who heard about it believed and were baptized.8Now Crispus, the leader of the synagogue, believed in the Lord, along with his whole family. Many Corinthians who heard Paul also believed and were baptized.
The Lord said to Paul by a vision in the night, "Do not be afraid, but speak and do not be silent,9One night, the Lord told Paul in a vision, "Stop being afraid to speak out! Don't remain silent!
because I am with you, and no one will assault you to harm you, because I have many people in this city."10For I am with you, and no one will lay a hand on you or harm you, because I have many people in this city."
So he stayed there a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them. 11So Paul lived there for a year and a half and continued to teach the word of God among the people there.
Now while Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews attacked Paul together and brought him before the judgment seat,12While Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jewish leaders gathered together, attacked Paul, and brought him before the judge's seat.
saying, "This man is persuading people to worship God in a way contrary to the law!"13They said, "This man is persuading people to worship God in ways that are contrary to the Law."
But just as Paul was about to speak, Gallio said to the Jews, "If it were a matter of some crime or serious piece of villainy, I would have been justified in accepting the complaint of you Jews,14Paul was about to speak when Gallio admonished the Jewish leaders, "If there were some misdemeanor or crime involved, it would be reasonable to put up with you Jews.
but since it concerns points of disagreement about words and names and your own law, settle it yourselves. I will not be a judge of these things!"15But since it is a question about words, names, and your own Law, you will have to take care of that yourselves. I refuse to be a judge in these matters."
Then he had them forced away from the judgment seat.16So he drove them away from the judge's seat.
So they all seized Sosthenes, the president of the synagogue, and began to beat him in front of the judgment seat. Yet none of these things were of any concern to Gallio. 17Then all of them took Sosthenes, the synagogue leader, and began beating him in front of the judge's seat. But Gallio paid no attention to any of this.
Paul, after staying many more days in Corinth, said farewell to the brothers and sailed away to Syria accompanied by Priscilla and Aquila. He had his hair cut off at Cenchrea because he had made a vow.18After staying there for quite a while longer, Paul said goodbye to the brothers and sailed for Syria, accompanied by Priscilla and Aquila. He had his hair cut in Cenchrea, since he was under a vow.
When they reached Ephesus, Paul left Priscilla and Aquila behind there, but he himself went into the synagogue and addressed the Jews.19When they arrived in Ephesus, he left Priscilla and Aquila there. Then he went into the synagogue and had a discussion with the Jews.
When they asked him to stay longer, he would not consent,20They asked him to stay longer, but he refused.
but said farewell to them and added, "I will come back to you again if God wills." Then he set sail from Ephesus,21As he told them goodbye, he said, "I will come back to you again if it is God's will." Then he set sail from Ephesus.
and when he arrived at Caesarea, he went up and greeted the church at Jerusalem and then went down to Antioch.22When he arrived in Caesarea, he went up to Jerusalem, greeted the church there, and then returned to Antioch.
After he spent some time there, Paul left and went through the region of Galatia and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples. 23After spending some time there, he departed and went from place to place through the region of Galatia and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples.
Now a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, arrived in Ephesus. He was an eloquent speaker, well-versed in the scriptures.24Meanwhile, a Jew named Apollos arrived in Ephesus. He was a native of Alexandria, an eloquent man, and well versed in the Scriptures.
He had been instructed in the way of the Lord, and with great enthusiasm he spoke and taught accurately the facts about Jesus, although he knew only the baptism of John.25He had been instructed in the Lord's way, and with spiritual fervor he kept speaking and teaching accurately about Jesus, although he knew only about John's baptism.
He began to speak out fearlessly in the synagogue, but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained the way of God to him more accurately.26He began to speak boldly in the synagogue, but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him home and explained God's way to him more accurately.
When Apollos wanted to cross over to Achaia, the brothers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples to welcome him. When he arrived, he assisted greatly those who had believed by grace,27When Apollos wanted to cross over to Achaia, the brothers wrote to the disciples there, urging them to welcome him. On his arrival he greatly helped those who, through God's grace, had believed.
for he refuted the Jews vigorously in public debate, demonstrating from the scriptures that the Christ was Jesus. 28He successfully refuted the Jews in public and proved by the Scriptures that Jesus is the Messiah.
