For the music director; a psalm of David. In you, O LORD, I have taken shelter! Never let me be humiliated! Vindicate me by rescuing me! 1To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. In thee, O LORD, do I put my trust; let me never be ashamed: deliver me in thy righteousness.
Listen to me! Quickly deliver me! Be my protector and refuge, a stronghold where I can be safe! 2Bow down thine ear to me; deliver me speedily: be thou my strong rock, for an house of defence to save me.
For you are my high ridge and my stronghold; for the sake of your own reputation you lead me and guide me. 3For thou art my rock and my fortress; therefore for thy name's sake lead me, and guide me.
You will free me from the net they hid for me, for you are my place of refuge. 4Pull me out of the net that they have laid privily for me: for thou art my strength.
Into your hand I entrust my life; you will rescue me, O LORD, the faithful God. 5Into thine hand I commit my spirit: thou hast redeemed me, O LORD God of truth.
I hate those who serve worthless idols, but I trust in the LORD. 6I have hated them that regard lying vanities: but I trust in the LORD.
I will be happy and rejoice in your faithfulness, because you notice my pain and you are aware of how distressed I am. 7I will be glad and rejoice in thy mercy: for thou hast considered my trouble; thou hast known my soul in adversities;
You do not deliver me over to the power of the enemy; you enable me to stand in a wide open place. 8And hast not shut me up into the hand of the enemy: thou hast set my feet in a large room.
Have mercy on me, for I am in distress! My eyes grow dim from suffering. I have lost my strength. 9Have mercy upon me, O LORD, for I am in trouble: mine eye is consumed with grief, yea, my soul and my belly.
For my life nears its end in pain; my years draw to a close as I groan. My strength fails me because of my sin, and my bones become brittle. 10For my life is spent with grief, and my years with sighing: my strength faileth because of mine iniquity, and my bones are consumed.
Because of all my enemies, people disdain me; my neighbors are appalled by my suffering--those who know me are horrified by my condition; those who see me in the street run away from me. 11I was a reproach among all mine enemies, but especially among my neighbours, and a fear to mine acquaintance: they that did see me without fled from me.
I am forgotten, like a dead man no one thinks about; I am regarded as worthless, like a broken jar. 12I am forgotten as a dead man out of mind: I am like a broken vessel.
For I hear what so many are saying, the terrifying news that comes from every direction. When they plot together against me, they figure out how they can take my life. 13For I have heard the slander of many: fear was on every side: while they took counsel together against me, they devised to take away my life.
But I trust in you, O LORD! I declare, "You are my God!" 14But I trusted in thee, O LORD: I said, Thou art my God.
You determine my destiny! Rescue me from the power of my enemies and those who chase me. 15My times are in thy hand: deliver me from the hand of mine enemies, and from them that persecute me.
Smile on your servant! Deliver me because of your faithfulness! 16Make thy face to shine upon thy servant: save me for thy mercies' sake.
O LORD, do not let me be humiliated, for I call out to you! May evil men be humiliated! May they go wailing to the grave! 17Let me not be ashamed, O LORD; for I have called upon thee: let the wicked be ashamed, and let them be silent in the grave.
May lying lips be silenced--lips that speak defiantly against the innocent with arrogance and contempt! 18Let the lying lips be put to silence; which speak grievous things proudly and contemptuously against the righteous.
How great is your favor, which you store up for your loyal followers! In plain sight of everyone you bestow it on those who take shelter in you. 19Oh how great is thy goodness, which thou hast laid up for them that fear thee; which thou hast wrought for them that trust in thee before the sons of men!
You hide them with you, where they are safe from the attacks of men; you conceal them in a shelter, where they are safe from slanderous attacks. 20Thou shalt hide them in the secret of thy presence from the pride of man: thou shalt keep them secretly in a pavilion from the strife of tongues.
The LORD deserves praise for he demonstrated his amazing faithfulness to me when I was besieged by enemies. 21Blessed be the LORD: for he hath shewed me his marvellous kindness in a strong city.
I jumped to conclusions and said, "I am cut off from your presence!" But you heard my plea for mercy when I cried out to you for help. 22For I said in my haste, I am cut off from before thine eyes: nevertheless thou heardest the voice of my supplications when I cried unto thee.
Love the LORD, all you faithful followers of his! The LORD protects those who have integrity, but he pays back in full the one who acts arrogantly. 23O love the LORD, all ye his saints: for the LORD preserveth the faithful, and plentifully rewardeth the proud doer.
Be strong and confident, all you who wait on the LORD! 24Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the LORD.
