For the music director; a psalm of David. Listen to me, O God, as I offer my lament! Protect my life from the enemy's terrifying attacks. | 1To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. Hear my voice, O God, in my prayer: preserve my life from fear of the enemy. |
Hide me from the plots of evil men, from the crowd of evildoers. | 2Hide me from the secret counsel of the wicked; from the insurrection of the workers of iniquity: |
They sharpen their tongues like a sword; they aim their arrow, a slanderous charge, | 3Who whet their tongue like a sword, and bend their bows to shoot their arrows, even bitter words: |
in order to shoot down the innocent in secluded places. They shoot at him suddenly and are unafraid of retaliation. | 4That they may shoot in secret at the perfect: suddenly do they shoot at him, and fear not. |
They encourage one another to carry out their evil deed. They plan how to hide snares, and boast, "Who will see them?" | 5They encourage themselves in an evil matter: they commune of laying snares privily; they say, Who shall see them? |
They devise unjust schemes; they disguise a well-conceived plot. Man's inner thoughts cannot be discovered. | 6They search out iniquities; they accomplish a diligent search: both the inward thought of every one of them, and the heart, is deep. |
But God will shoot at them; suddenly they will be wounded by an arrow. | 7But God shall shoot at them with an arrow; suddenly shall they be wounded. |
Their slander will bring about their demise. All who see them will shudder, | 8So they shall make their own tongue to fall upon themselves: all that see them shall flee away. |
and all people will fear. They will proclaim what God has done, and reflect on his deeds. | 9And all men shall fear, and shall declare the work of God; for they shall wisely consider of his doing. |
The godly will rejoice in the LORD and take shelter in him. All the morally upright will boast. | 10The righteous shall be glad in the LORD, and shall trust in him; and all the upright in heart shall glory. |
