So you, my child, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.1You therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.
And entrust what you heard me say in the presence of many others as witnesses to faithful people who will be competent to teach others as well.2The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.
Take your share of suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.3Suffer hardship with me, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.
No one in military service gets entangled in matters of everyday life; otherwise he will not please the one who recruited him.4No soldier in active service entangles himself in the affairs of everyday life, so that he may please the one who enlisted him as a soldier.
Also, if anyone competes as an athlete, he will not be crowned as the winner unless he competes according to the rules.5Also if anyone competes as an athlete, he does not win the prize unless he competes according to the rules.
The farmer who works hard ought to have the first share of the crops.6The hard-working farmer ought to be the first to receive his share of the crops.
Think about what I am saying and the Lord will give you understanding of all this. 7Consider what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything.
Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, a descendant of David; such is my gospel,8Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, descendant of David, according to my gospel,
for which I suffer hardship to the point of imprisonment as a criminal, but God's message is not imprisoned!9for which I suffer hardship even to imprisonment as a criminal; but the word of God is not imprisoned.
So I endure all things for the sake of those chosen by God, that they too may obtain salvation in Christ Jesus and its eternal glory.10For this reason I endure all things for the sake of those who are chosen, so that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus and with it eternal glory.
This saying is trustworthy: If we died with him, we will also live with him. 11It is a trustworthy statement: For if we died with Him, we will also live with Him;
If we endure, we will also reign with him. If we deny him, he will also deny us. 12If we endure, we will also reign with Him; If we deny Him, He also will deny us;
If we are unfaithful, he remains faithful, since he cannot deny himself. 13If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself.
Remind people of these things and solemnly charge them before the Lord not to wrangle over words. This is of no benefit; it just brings ruin on those who listen.14Remind them of these things, and solemnly charge them in the presence of God not to wrangle about words, which is useless and leads to the ruin of the hearers.
Make every effort to present yourself before God as a proven worker who does not need to be ashamed, teaching the message of truth accurately.15Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.
But avoid profane chatter, because those occupied with it will stray further and further into ungodliness,16But avoid worldly and empty chatter, for it will lead to further ungodliness,
and their message will spread its infection like gangrene. Hymenaeus and Philetus are in this group.17and their talk will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus,
They have strayed from the truth by saying that the resurrection has already occurred, and they are undermining some people's faith.18men who have gone astray from the truth saying that the resurrection has already taken place, and they upset the faith of some.
However, God's solid foundation remains standing, bearing this seal: "The Lord knows those who are his," and "Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from evil." 19Nevertheless, the firm foundation of God stands, having this seal, "The Lord knows those who are His," and, "Everyone who names the name of the Lord is to abstain from wickedness."
Now in a wealthy home there are not only gold and silver vessels, but also ones made of wood and of clay, and some are for honorable use, but others for ignoble use.20Now in a large house there are not only gold and silver vessels, but also vessels of wood and of earthenware, and some to honor and some to dishonor.
So if someone cleanses himself of such behavior, he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart, useful for the Master, prepared for every good work.21Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from these things, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified, useful to the Master, prepared for every good work.
But keep away from youthful passions, and pursue righteousness, faithfulness, love, and peace, in company with others who call on the Lord from a pure heart.22Now flee from youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.
But reject foolish and ignorant controversies, because you know they breed infighting.23But refuse foolish and ignorant speculations, knowing that they produce quarrels.
And the Lord's slave must not engage in heated disputes but be kind toward all, an apt teacher, patient,24The Lord's bond-servant must not be quarrelsome, but be kind to all, able to teach, patient when wronged,
correcting opponents with gentleness. Perhaps God will grant them repentance and then knowledge of the truth25with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, if perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth,
and they will come to their senses and escape the devil's trap where they are held captive to do his will. 26and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, having been held captive by him to do his will.
