Now regarding the arrival of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to be with him, we ask you, brothers and sisters,1Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him, we ask you, brothers and sisters,
not to be easily shaken from your composure or disturbed by any kind of spirit or message or letter allegedly from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord is already here.2not to become easily unsettled or alarmed by the teaching allegedly from us--whether by a prophecy or by word of mouth or by letter--asserting that the day of the Lord has already come.
Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not arrive until the rebellion comes and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction.3Don't let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction.
He opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, and as a result he takes his seat in God's temple, displaying himself as God.4He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God's temple, proclaiming himself to be God.
Surely you recall that I used to tell you these things while I was still with you.5Don't you remember that when I was with you I used to tell you these things?
And so you know what holds him back, so that he will be revealed in his own time.6And now you know what is holding him back, so that he may be revealed at the proper time.
For the hidden power of lawlessness is already at work. However, the one who holds him back will do so until he is taken out of the way,7For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work; but the one who now holds it back will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way.
and then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will destroy by the breath of his mouth and wipe out by the manifestation of his arrival.8And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of his mouth and destroy by the splendor of his coming.
The arrival of the lawless one will be by Satan's working with all kinds of miracles and signs and false wonders,9The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with how Satan works. He will use all sorts of displays of power through signs and wonders that serve the lie,
and with every kind of evil deception directed against those who are perishing, because they found no place in their hearts for the truth so as to be saved.10and all the ways that wickedness deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.
Consequently God sends on them a deluding influence so that they will believe what is false.11For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie
And so all of them who have not believed the truth but have delighted in evil will be condemned. 12and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.
But we ought to thank God always for you, brothers and sisters loved by the Lord, because God chose you from the beginning for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and faith in the truth.13But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers and sisters loved by the Lord, because God chose you as firstfruits to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth.
He called you to this salvation through our gospel, so that you may possess the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.14He called you to this through our gospel, that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Therefore, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold on to the traditions that we taught you, whether by speech or by letter.15So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the teachings we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter.
Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by grace gave us eternal comfort and good hope,16May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope,
encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good thing you do or say. 17encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word.
