Now Sarai, Abram's wife, had not given birth to any children, but she had an Egyptian servant named Hagar. | 1Now Sarai, Abram's wife, had borne him no children. But she had an Egyptian slave named Hagar; |
So Sarai said to Abram, "Since the LORD has prevented me from having children, have sexual relations with my servant. Perhaps I can have a family by her." Abram did what Sarai told him. | 2so she said to Abram, "The LORD has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her." Abram agreed to what Sarai said. |
So after Abram had lived in Canaan for ten years, Sarai, Abram's wife, gave Hagar, her Egyptian servant, to her husband to be his wife. | 3So after Abram had been living in Canaan ten years, Sarai his wife took her Egyptian slave Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife. |
He had sexual relations with Hagar, and she became pregnant. Once Hagar realized she was pregnant, she despised Sarai. | 4He slept with Hagar, and she conceived. When she knew she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress. |
Then Sarai said to Abram, "You have brought this wrong on me! I allowed my servant to have sexual relations with you, but when she realized that she was pregnant, she despised me. May the LORD judge between you and me!" | 5Then Sarai said to Abram, "You are responsible for the wrong I am suffering. I put my slave in your arms, and now that she knows she is pregnant, she despises me. May the LORD judge between you and me." |
Abram said to Sarai, "Since your servant is under your authority, do to her whatever you think best." Then Sarai treated Hagar harshly, so she ran away from Sarai. | 6"Your slave is in your hands," Abram said. "Do with her whatever you think best." Then Sarai mistreated Hagar; so she fled from her. |
The LORD's angel found Hagar near a spring of water in the desert--the spring that is along the road to Shur. | 7The angel of the LORD found Hagar near a spring in the desert; it was the spring that is beside the road to Shur. |
He said, "Hagar, servant of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?" She replied, "I'm running away from my mistress, Sarai." | 8And he said, "Hagar, slave of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?" "I'm running away from my mistress Sarai," she answered. |
Then the LORD's angel said to her, "Return to your mistress and submit to her authority. | 9Then the angel of the LORD told her, "Go back to your mistress and submit to her." |
I will greatly multiply your descendants," the LORD's angel added, "so that they will be too numerous to count." | 10The angel added, "I will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count." |
Then the LORD's angel said to her, "You are now pregnant and are about to give birth to a son. You are to name him Ishmael, for the LORD has heard your painful groans. | 11The angel of the LORD also said to her: "You are now pregnant and you will give birth to a son. You shall name him Ishmael, for the LORD has heard of your misery. |
He will be a wild donkey of a man. He will be hostile to everyone, and everyone will be hostile to him. He will live away from his brothers." | 12He will be a wild donkey of a man; his hand will be against everyone and everyone's hand against him, and he will live in hostility toward all his brothers." |
So Hagar named the LORD who spoke to her, "You are the God who sees me," for she said, "Here I have seen one who sees me!" | 13She gave this name to the LORD who spoke to her: "You are the God who sees me," for she said, "I have now seen the One who sees me." |
That is why the well was called Beer Lahai Roi. (It is located between Kadesh and Bered.) | 14That is why the well was called Beer Lahai Roi; it is still there, between Kadesh and Bered. |
So Hagar gave birth to Abram's son, whom Abram named Ishmael. | 15So Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram gave the name Ishmael to the son she had borne. |
(Now Abram was 86 years old when Hagar gave birth to Ishmael.) | 16Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore him Ishmael. |
