Some time after these things God tested Abraham. He said to him, "Abraham!" "Here I am!" Abraham replied.1Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, "Abraham!" "Here I am," he replied.
God said, "Take your son--your only son, whom you love, Isaac--and go to the land of Moriah! Offer him up there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains which I will indicate to you." 2Then God said, "Take your son, your only son, whom you love--Isaac--and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you."
Early in the morning Abraham got up and saddled his donkey. He took two of his young servants with him, along with his son Isaac. When he had cut the wood for the burnt offering, he started out for the place God had spoken to him about. 3Early the next morning Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about.
On the third day Abraham caught sight of the place in the distance.4On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance.
So he said to his servants, "You two stay here with the donkey while the boy and I go up there. We will worship and then return to you." 5He said to his servants, "Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you."
Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and put it on his son Isaac. Then he took the fire and the knife in his hand, and the two of them walked on together.6Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together,
Isaac said to his father Abraham, "My father?" "What is it, my son?" he replied. "Here is the fire and the wood," Isaac said, "but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?"7Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, "Father?" "Yes, my son?" Abraham replied. "The fire and wood are here," Isaac said, "but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?"
"God will provide for himself the lamb for the burnt offering, my son," Abraham replied. The two of them continued on together. 8Abraham answered, "God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son." And the two of them went on together.
When they came to the place God had told him about, Abraham built the altar there and arranged the wood on it. Next he tied up his son Isaac and placed him on the altar on top of the wood.9When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood.
Then Abraham reached out his hand, took the knife, and prepared to slaughter his son.10Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.
But the LORD's angel called to him from heaven, "Abraham! Abraham!" "Here I am!" he answered.11But the angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven, "Abraham! Abraham!" "Here I am," he replied.
"Do not harm the boy!" the angel said. "Do not do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God because you did not withhold your son, your only son, from me." 12"Do not lay a hand on the boy," he said. "Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son."
Abraham looked up and saw behind him a ram caught in the bushes by its horns. So he went over and got the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son.13Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son.
And Abraham called the name of that place "The LORD provides." It is said to this day, "In the mountain of the LORD provision will be made." 14So Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide. And to this day it is said, "On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided."
The LORD's angel called to Abraham a second time from heaven15The angel of the LORD called to Abraham from heaven a second time
and said, "'I solemnly swear by my own name,' decrees the LORD, 'that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son,16and said, "I swear by myself, declares the LORD, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son,
I will indeed bless you, and I will greatly multiply your descendants so that they will be as countless as the stars in the sky or the grains of sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the strongholds of their enemies.17I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies,
Because you have obeyed me, all the nations of the earth will pronounce blessings on one another using the name of your descendants.'" 18and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me."
Then Abraham returned to his servants, and they set out together for Beer Sheba where Abraham stayed. 19Then Abraham returned to his servants, and they set off together for Beersheba. And Abraham stayed in Beersheba.
After these things Abraham was told, "Milcah also has borne children to your brother Nahor--20Some time later Abraham was told, "Milkah is also a mother; she has borne sons to your brother Nahor:
Uz the firstborn, his brother Buz, Kemuel (the father of Aram),21Uz the firstborn, Buz his brother, Kemuel (the father of Aram),
Kesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel."22Kesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph and Bethuel."
(Now Bethuel became the father of Rebekah.) These were the eight sons Milcah bore to Abraham's brother Nahor.23Bethuel became the father of Rebekah. Milkah bore these eight sons to Abraham's brother Nahor.
His concubine, whose name was Reumah, also bore him children--Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah. 24His concubine, whose name was Reumah, also had sons: Tebah, Gaham, Tahash and Maakah.
