For the music director; a psalm of David. O LORD, rescue me from wicked men! Protect me from violent men, | 1For the director of music. A psalm of David. Rescue me, LORD, from evildoers; protect me from the violent, |
who plan ways to harm me. All day long they stir up conflict. | 2who devise evil plans in their hearts and stir up war every day. |
Their tongues wound like a serpent; a viper's venom is behind their lips. (Selah) | 3They make their tongues as sharp as a serpent's; the poison of vipers is on their lips. |
O LORD, shelter me from the power of the wicked! Protect me from violent men, who plan to knock me over. | 4Keep me safe, LORD, from the hands of the wicked; protect me from the violent, who devise ways to trip my feet. |
Proud men hide a snare for me; evil men spread a net by the path; they set traps for me. (Selah) | 5The arrogant have hidden a snare for me; they have spread out the cords of their net and have set traps for me along my path. |
I say to the LORD, "You are my God." O LORD, pay attention to my plea for mercy! | 6I say to the LORD, "You are my God." Hear, LORD, my cry for mercy. |
O sovereign LORD, my strong deliverer, you shield my head in the day of battle. | 7Sovereign LORD, my strong deliverer, you shield my head in the day of battle. |
O LORD, do not let the wicked have their way! Do not allow their plan to succeed when they attack! (Selah) | 8Do not grant the wicked their desires, LORD; do not let their plans succeed. |
As for the heads of those who surround me--may the harm done by their lips overwhelm them! | 9Those who surround me proudly rear their heads; may the mischief of their lips engulf them. |
May he rain down fiery coals upon them! May he throw them into the fire! From bottomless pits they will not escape. | 10May burning coals fall on them; may they be thrown into the fire, into miry pits, never to rise. |
A slanderer will not endure on the earth; calamity will hunt down a violent man and strike him down. | 11May slanderers not be established in the land; may disaster hunt down the violent. |
I know that the LORD defends the cause of the oppressed and vindicates the poor. | 12I know that the LORD secures justice for the poor and upholds the cause of the needy. |
Certainly the godly will give thanks to your name; the morally upright will live in your presence. | 13Surely the righteous will praise your name, and the upright will live in your presence. |
