For the music director; according to the al-tashcheth style; a prayer of David, written when Saul sent men to surround his house and murder him. Deliver me from my enemies, my God! Protect me from those who attack me! | 1For the director of music. To the tune of "Do Not Destroy." Of David. A miktam. When Saul had sent men to watch David's house in order to kill him. Deliver me from my enemies, O God; be my fortress against those who are attacking me. |
Deliver me from evildoers! Rescue me from violent men! | 2Deliver me from evildoers and save me from those who are after my blood. |
For look, they wait to ambush me; powerful men stalk me, but not because I have rebelled or sinned, O LORD. | 3See how they lie in wait for me! Fierce men conspire against me for no offense or sin of mine, LORD. |
Though I have done nothing wrong, they are anxious to attack. Spring into action and help me! Take notice of me! | 4I have done no wrong, yet they are ready to attack me. Arise to help me; look on my plight! |
You, O LORD God, the invincible warrior, the God of Israel, rouse yourself and punish all the nations! Have no mercy on any treacherous evildoers! (Selah) | 5You, LORD God Almighty, you who are the God of Israel, rouse yourself to punish all the nations; show no mercy to wicked traitors. |
They return in the evening; they growl like a dog and prowl around outside the city. | 6They return at evening, snarling like dogs, and prowl about the city. |
Look, they hurl insults at me and openly threaten to kill me, for they say, "Who hears?" | 7See what they spew from their mouths-- the words from their lips are sharp as swords, and they think, "Who can hear us?" |
But you, O LORD, laugh in disgust at them; you taunt all the nations. | 8But you laugh at them, LORD; you scoff at all those nations. |
You are my source of strength! I will wait for you! For God is my refuge. | 9You are my strength, I watch for you; you, God, are my fortress, |
The God who loves me will help me; God will enable me to triumph over my enemies. | 10my God on whom I can rely. God will go before me and will let me gloat over those who slander me. |
Do not strike them dead suddenly, because then my people might forget the lesson. Use your power to make them homeless vagabonds and then bring them down, O Lord who shields us! | 11But do not kill them, Lord our shield, or my people will forget. In your might uproot them and bring them down. |
They speak sinful words. So let them be trapped by their own pride and by the curses and lies they speak! | 12For the sins of their mouths, for the words of their lips, let them be caught in their pride. For the curses and lies they utter, |
Angrily wipe them out! Wipe them out so they vanish! Let them know that God rules in Jacob and to the ends of the earth! (Selah) | 13consume them in your wrath, consume them till they are no more. Then it will be known to the ends of the earth that God rules over Jacob. |
They return in the evening; they growl like a dog and prowl around outside the city. | 14They return at evening, snarling like dogs, and prowl about the city. |
They wander around looking for something to eat; they refuse to sleep until they are full. | 15They wander about for food and howl if not satisfied. |
As for me, I will sing about your strength; I will praise your loyal love in the morning. For you are my refuge and my place of shelter when I face trouble. | 16But I will sing of your strength, in the morning I will sing of your love; for you are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble. |
You are my source of strength! I will sing praises to you! For God is my refuge, the God who loves me. | 17You are my strength, I sing praise to you; you, God, are my fortress, my God on whom I can rely. |
