From Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, to further the promise of life in Christ Jesus,1This letter is from Paul, chosen by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus. I have been sent out to tell others about the life he has promised through faith in Christ Jesus.
to Timothy, my dear child. Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord! 2I am writing to Timothy, my dear son. May God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord give you grace, mercy, and peace. Encouragement to Be Faithful
I am thankful to God, whom I have served with a clear conscience as my ancestors did, when I remember you in my prayers as I do constantly night and day.3Timothy, I thank God for you—the God I serve with a clear conscience, just as my ancestors did. Night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers.
As I remember your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy.4I long to see you again, for I remember your tears as we parted. And I will be filled with joy when we are together again.
I recall your sincere faith that was alive first in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice, and I am sure is in you. 5I remember your genuine faith, for you share the faith that first filled your grandmother Lois and your mother, Eunice. And I know that same faith continues strong in you.
Because of this I remind you to rekindle God's gift that you possess through the laying on of my hands.6This is why I remind you to fan into flames the spiritual gift God gave you when I laid my hands on you.
For God did not give us a Spirit of fear but of power and love and self-control.7For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.
So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me, a prisoner for his sake, but by God's power accept your share of suffering for the gospel.8So never be ashamed to tell others about our Lord. And don’t be ashamed of me, either, even though I’m in prison for him. With the strength God gives you, be ready to suffer with me for the sake of the Good News.
He is the one who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not based on our works but on his own purpose and grace, granted to us in Christ Jesus before time began,9For God saved us and called us to live a holy life. He did this, not because we deserved it, but because that was his plan from before the beginning of time—to show us his grace through Christ Jesus.
but now made visible through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus. He has broken the power of death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel!10And now he has made all of this plain to us by the appearing of Christ Jesus, our Savior. He broke the power of death and illuminated the way to life and immortality through the Good News.
For this gospel I was appointed a preacher and apostle and teacher.11And God chose me to be a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher of this Good News.
Because of this, in fact, I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, because I know the one in whom my faith is set and I am convinced that he is able to protect what has been entrusted to me until that day.12That is why I am suffering here in prison. But I am not ashamed of it, for I know the one in whom I trust, and I am sure that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until the day of his return.
Hold to the standard of sound words that you heard from me and do so with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.13Hold on to the pattern of wholesome teaching you learned from me—a pattern shaped by the faith and love that you have in Christ Jesus.
Protect that good thing entrusted to you, through the Holy Spirit who lives within us. 14Through the power of the Holy Spirit who lives within us, carefully guard the precious truth that has been entrusted to you.
You know that everyone in the province of Asia deserted me, including Phygelus and Hermogenes.15As you know, everyone from the province of Asia has deserted me—even Phygelus and Hermogenes.
May the Lord grant mercy to the family of Onesiphorus, because he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my imprisonment.16May the Lord show special kindness to Onesiphorus and all his family because he often visited and encouraged me. He was never ashamed of me because I was in chains.
But when he arrived in Rome, he eagerly searched for me and found me.17When he came to Rome, he searched everywhere until he found me.
May the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on that day! And you know very well all the ways he served me in Ephesus. 18May the Lord show him special kindness on the day of Christ’s return. And you know very well how helpful he was in Ephesus.
