While Peter and John were speaking to the people, the priests and the commander of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to them,1While Peter and John were speaking to the people, they were confronted by the priests, the captain of the Temple guard, and some of the Sadducees.
angry because they were teaching the people and announcing in Jesus the resurrection of the dead.2These leaders were very disturbed that Peter and John were teaching the people that through Jesus there is a resurrection of the dead.
So they seized them and put them in jail until the next day (for it was already evening).3They arrested them and, since it was already evening, put them in jail until morning.
But many of those who had listened to the message believed, and the number of the men came to about five thousand. 4But many of the people who heard their message believed it, so the number of men who believed now totaled about 5,000.
On the next day, their rulers, elders, and experts in the law came together in Jerusalem.5The next day the council of all the rulers and elders and teachers of religious law met in Jerusalem.
Annas the high priest was there, and Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and others who were members of the high priest's family.6Annas the high priest was there, along with Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and other relatives of the high priest.
After making Peter and John stand in their midst, they began to inquire, "By what power or by what name did you do this?"7They brought in the two disciples and demanded, “By what power, or in whose name, have you done this?”
Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, replied, "Rulers of the people and elders,8Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers and elders of our people,
if we are being examined today for a good deed done to a sick man--by what means this man was healed--9are we being questioned today because we’ve done a good deed for a crippled man? Do you want to know how he was healed?
let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, this man stands before you healthy.10Let me clearly state to all of you and to all the people of Israel that he was healed by the powerful name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, the man you crucified but whom God raised from the dead.
This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, that has become the cornerstone.11For Jesus is the one referred to in the Scriptures, where it says, ‘The stone that you builders rejected has now become the cornerstone.’
And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among people by which we must be saved." 12There is salvation in no one else! God has given no other name under heaven by which we must be saved.”
When they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and discovered that they were uneducated and ordinary men, they were amazed and recognized these men had been with Jesus.13The members of the council were amazed when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, for they could see that they were ordinary men with no special training in the Scriptures. They also recognized them as men who had been with Jesus.
And because they saw the man who had been healed standing with them, they had nothing to say against this.14But since they could see the man who had been healed standing right there among them, there was nothing the council could say.
But when they had ordered them to go outside the council, they began to confer with one another,15So they ordered Peter and John out of the council chamber and conferred among themselves.
saying, "What should we do with these men? For it is plain to all who live in Jerusalem that a notable miraculous sign has come about through them, and we cannot deny it.16“What should we do with these men?” they asked each other. “We can’t deny that they have performed a miraculous sign, and everybody in Jerusalem knows about it.
But to keep this matter from spreading any further among the people, let us warn them to speak no more to anyone in this name."17But to keep them from spreading their propaganda any further, we must warn them not to speak to anyone in Jesus’ name again.”
And they called them in and ordered them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.18So they called the apostles back in and commanded them never again to speak or teach in the name of Jesus.
But Peter and John replied, "Whether it is right before God to obey you rather than God, you decide,19But Peter and John replied, “Do you think God wants us to obey you rather than him?
for it is impossible for us not to speak about what we have seen and heard."20We cannot stop telling about everything we have seen and heard.”
After threatening them further, they released them, for they could not find how to punish them on account of the people, because they were all praising God for what had happened.21The council then threatened them further, but they finally let them go because they didn’t know how to punish them without starting a riot. For everyone was praising God
For the man, on whom this miraculous sign of healing had been performed, was over forty years old. 22for this miraculous sign—the healing of a man who had been lame for more than forty years. The Believers Pray for Courage
When they were released, Peter and John went to their fellow believers and reported everything the high priests and the elders had said to them.23As soon as they were freed, Peter and John returned to the other believers and told them what the leading priests and elders had said.
When they heard this, they raised their voices to God with one mind and said, "Master of all, you who made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and everything that is in them,24When they heard the report, all the believers lifted their voices together in prayer to God: “O Sovereign Lord, Creator of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them—
who said by the Holy Spirit through your servant David our forefather, 'Why do the nations rage, and the peoples plot foolish things? 25you spoke long ago by the Holy Spirit through our ancestor David, your servant, saying, ‘Why were the nations so angry? Why did they waste their time with futile plans?
The kings of the earth stood together, and the rulers assembled together, against the Lord and against his Christ.' 26The kings of the earth prepared for battle; the rulers gathered together against the LORD and against his Messiah.’
"For indeed both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, assembled together in this city against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed,27“In fact, this has happened here in this very city! For Herod Antipas, Pontius Pilate the governor, the Gentiles, and the people of Israel were all united against Jesus, your holy servant, whom you anointed.
to do as much as your power and your plan had decided beforehand would happen.28But everything they did was determined beforehand according to your will.
And now, Lord, pay attention to their threats, and grant to your servants to speak your message with great courage,29And now, O Lord, hear their threats, and give us, your servants, great boldness in preaching your word.
while you extend your hand to heal, and to bring about miraculous signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus."30Stretch out your hand with healing power; may miraculous signs and wonders be done through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”
When they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak the word of God courageously. 31After this prayer, the meeting place shook, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. Then they preached the word of God with boldness. The Believers Share Their Possessions
The group of those who believed were of one heart and mind, and no one said that any of his possessions was his own, but everything was held in common.32All the believers were united in heart and mind. And they felt that what they owned was not their own, so they shared everything they had.
With great power the apostles were giving testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was on them all.33The apostles testified powerfully to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and God’s great blessing was upon them all.
For there was no one needy among them, because those who were owners of land or houses were selling them and bringing the proceeds from the sales34There were no needy people among them, because those who owned land or houses would sell them
and placing them at the apostles' feet. The proceeds were distributed to each, as anyone had need.35and bring the money to the apostles to give to those in need.
So Joseph, a Levite who was a native of Cyprus, called by the apostles Barnabas (which is translated "son of encouragement"),36For instance, there was Joseph, the one the apostles nicknamed Barnabas (which means “Son of Encouragement”). He was from the tribe of Levi and came from the island of Cyprus.
sold a field that belonged to him and brought the money and placed it at the apostles' feet. 37He sold a field he owned and brought the money to the apostles.
