| 1A song of ascents. In my distress I cried out to the LORD and he answered me. | 1I took my troubles to the LORD; I cried out to him, and he answered my prayer. |
| 2I said, "O LORD, rescue me from those who lie with their lips and those who deceive with their tongue. | 2Rescue me, O LORD, from liars and from all deceitful people. |
| 3How will he severely punish you, you deceptive talker? | 3O deceptive tongue, what will God do to you? How will he increase your punishment? |
| 4Here's how! With the sharp arrows of warriors, with arrowheads forged over the hot coals. | 4You will be pierced with sharp arrows and burned with glowing coals. |
| 5How miserable I am! For I have lived temporarily in Meshech; I have resided among the tents of Kedar. | 5How I suffer in far-off Meshech. It pains me to live in distant Kedar. |
| 6For too long I have had to reside with those who hate peace. | 6I am tired of living among people who hate peace. |
| 7I am committed to peace, but when I speak, they want to make war. | 7I search for peace; but when I speak of peace, they want war! |
