A musical composition by David, which he sang to the LORD concerning a Benjaminite named Cush. O LORD my God, in you I have taken shelter. Deliver me from all who chase me! Rescue me! | 1I come to you for protection, O LORD my God. Save me from my persecutors—rescue me! |
Otherwise they will rip me to shreds like a lion; they will tear me to bits and no one will be able to rescue me. | 2If you don’t, they will maul me like a lion, tearing me to pieces with no one to rescue me. |
O LORD my God, if I have done what they say, or am guilty of unjust actions, | 3O LORD my God, if I have done wrong or am guilty of injustice, |
or have wronged my ally, or helped his lawless enemy, | 4if I have betrayed a friend or plundered my enemy without cause, |
may an enemy relentlessly chase me and catch me; may he trample me to death and leave me lying dishonored in the dust. (Selah) | 5then let my enemies capture me. Let them trample me into the ground and drag my honor in the dust. Interlude |
Stand up angrily, LORD! Rise up with raging fury against my enemies! Wake up for my sake and execute the judgment you have decreed for them! | 6Arise, O LORD, in anger! Stand up against the fury of my enemies! Wake up, my God, and bring justice! |
The countries are assembled all around you; take once more your rightful place over them! | 7Gather the nations before you. Rule over them from on high. |
The LORD judges the nations. Vindicate me, LORD, because I am innocent, because I am blameless, O Exalted One! | 8The LORD judges the nations. Declare me righteous, O LORD, for I am innocent, O Most High! |
May the evil deeds of the wicked come to an end! But make the innocent secure, O righteous God, you who examine inner thoughts and motives! | 9End the evil of those who are wicked, and defend the righteous. For you look deep within the mind and heart, O righteous God. |
The Exalted God is my shield, the one who delivers the morally upright. | 10God is my shield, saving those whose hearts are true and right. |
God is a just judge; he is angry throughout the day. | 11God is an honest judge. He is angry with the wicked every day. |
If a person does not repent, God sharpens his sword and prepares to shoot his bow. | 12If a person does not repent, God will sharpen his sword; he will bend and string his bow. |
He prepares to use deadly weapons against him; he gets ready to shoot flaming arrows. | 13He will prepare his deadly weapons and shoot his flaming arrows. |
See the one who is pregnant with wickedness, who conceives destructive plans, and gives birth to harmful lies-- | 14The wicked conceive evil; they are pregnant with trouble and give birth to lies. |
he digs a pit and then falls into the hole he has made. | 15They dig a deep pit to trap others, then fall into it themselves. |
He becomes the victim of his own destructive plans and the violence he intended for others falls on his own head. | 16The trouble they make for others backfires on them. The violence they plan falls on their own heads. |
I will thank the LORD for his justice; I will sing praises to the sovereign LORD! | 17I will thank the LORD because he is just; I will sing praise to the name of the LORD Most High. |
