| 1So Isaac called for Jacob and blessed him. Then he commanded him: "Do not marry a Canaanite woman. | 1So Isaac called Jacob and blessed him and charged him, and said to him, "You shall not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan. |
| 2Go at once to Paddan Aram, to the house of your mother's father Bethuel. Take a wife for yourself there, from among the daughters of Laban, your mother's brother. | 2"Arise, go to Paddan-aram, to the house of Bethuel your mother's father; and from there take to yourself a wife from the daughters of Laban your mother's brother. |

| 8Esau then realized how displeasing the Canaanite women were to his father Isaac; | 8So Esau saw that the daughters of Canaan displeased his father Isaac; |
| 9so he went to Ishmael and married Mahalath, the sister of Nebaioth and daughter of Ishmael son of Abraham, in addition to the wives he already had. | 9and Esau went to Ishmael, and married, besides the wives that he had, Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael, Abraham's son, the sister of Nebaioth. |
| 10Jacob left Beersheba and set out for Harran. | 10Then Jacob departed from Beersheba and went toward Haran. |
| 11When he reached a certain place, he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep. | 11He came to a certain place and spent the night there, because the sun had set; and he took one of the stones of the place and put it under his head, and lay down in that place. |

| 18Early the next morning Jacob took the stone he had placed under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on top of it. | 18So Jacob rose early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on its top. |
| 19He called that place Bethel, though the city used to be called Luz. | 19He called the name of that place Bethel; however, previously the name of the city had been Luz. |
| 20Then Jacob made a vow, saying, "If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear | 20Then Jacob made a vow, saying, "If God will be with me and will keep me on this journey that I take, and will give me food to eat and garments to wear, |
| 21so that I return safely to my father's household, then the LORD will be my God | 21and I return to my father's house in safety, then the LORD will be my God. |
| 22and this stone that I have set up as a pillar will be God's house, and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth." | 22"This stone, which I have set up as a pillar, will be God's house, and of all that You give me I will surely give a tenth to You." |
