New International Version | New Living Translation |
For the director of music. To the tune of "Do Not Destroy." Of David. A miktam. When Saul had sent men to watch David's house in order to kill him. Deliver me from my enemies, O God; be my fortress against those who are attacking me. | 1Rescue me from my enemies, O God. Protect me from those who have come to destroy me. |
Deliver me from evildoers and save me from those who are after my blood. | 2Rescue me from these criminals; save me from these murderers. |
See how they lie in wait for me! Fierce men conspire against me for no offense or sin of mine, LORD. | 3They have set an ambush for me. Fierce enemies are out there waiting, LORD, though I have not sinned or offended them. |
I have done no wrong, yet they are ready to attack me. Arise to help me; look on my plight! | 4I have done nothing wrong, yet they prepare to attack me. Wake up! See what is happening and help me! |
You, LORD God Almighty, you who are the God of Israel, rouse yourself to punish all the nations; show no mercy to wicked traitors. | 5O LORD God of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, wake up and punish those hostile nations. Show no mercy to wicked traitors. Interlude |
They return at evening, snarling like dogs, and prowl about the city. | 6They come out at night, snarling like vicious dogs as they prowl the streets. |
See what they spew from their mouths-- the words from their lips are sharp as swords, and they think, "Who can hear us?" | 7Listen to the filth that comes from their mouths; their words cut like swords. “After all, who can hear us?” they sneer. |
But you laugh at them, LORD; you scoff at all those nations. | 8But LORD, you laugh at them. You scoff at all the hostile nations. |
You are my strength, I watch for you; you, God, are my fortress, | 9You are my strength; I wait for you to rescue me, for you, O God, are my fortress. |
my God on whom I can rely. God will go before me and will let me gloat over those who slander me. | 10In his unfailing love, my God will stand with me. He will let me look down in triumph on all my enemies. |
But do not kill them, Lord our shield, or my people will forget. In your might uproot them and bring them down. | 11Don’t kill them, for my people soon forget such lessons; stagger them with your power, and bring them to their knees, O Lord our shield. |
For the sins of their mouths, for the words of their lips, let them be caught in their pride. For the curses and lies they utter, | 12Because of the sinful things they say, because of the evil that is on their lips, let them be captured by their pride, their curses, and their lies. |
consume them in your wrath, consume them till they are no more. Then it will be known to the ends of the earth that God rules over Jacob. | 13Destroy them in your anger! Wipe them out completely! Then the whole world will know that God reigns in Israel. Interlude |
They return at evening, snarling like dogs, and prowl about the city. | 14My enemies come out at night, snarling like vicious dogs as they prowl the streets. |
They wander about for food and howl if not satisfied. | 15They scavenge for food but go to sleep unsatisfied. |
But I will sing of your strength, in the morning I will sing of your love; for you are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble. | 16But as for me, I will sing about your power. Each morning I will sing with joy about your unfailing love. For you have been my refuge, a place of safety when I am in distress. |
You are my strength, I sing praise to you; you, God, are my fortress, my God on whom I can rely. | 17O my Strength, to you I sing praises, for you, O God, are my refuge, the God who shows me unfailing love. |
