New King James Version | Berean Study Bible |
Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the fish’s belly. | 1From inside the fish, Jonah prayed to the LORD his God, |
And he said: “I cried out to the LORD because of my affliction, And He answered me. “Out of the belly of Sheol I cried, And You heard my voice. | 2saying: “In my distress I called to the LORD, and He answered me. From the belly of Sheol I called for help, and You heard my voice. |
For You cast me into the deep, Into the heart of the seas, And the floods surrounded me; All Your billows and Your waves passed over me. | 3For You cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the current swirled about me; all Your breakers and waves swept over me. |
Then I said, ‘I have been cast out of Your sight; Yet I will look again toward Your holy temple.’ | 4At this, I said, ‘I have been banished from Your sight; yet I will look once more toward Your holy temple.’ |
The waters surrounded me, even to my soul; The deep closed around me; Weeds were wrapped around my head. | 5The waters engulfed me to take my life; the watery depths closed around me; the seaweed wrapped around my head. |
I went down to the moorings of the mountains; The earth with its bars closed behind me forever; Yet You have brought up my life from the pit, O LORD, my God. | 6To the roots of the mountains I descended; the earth beneath me barred me in forever! But You raised my life from the pit, O LORD my God! |
“When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the LORD; And my prayer went up to You, Into Your holy temple. | 7As my life was fading away, I remembered the LORD. My prayer went up to You, to Your holy temple. |
“Those who regard worthless idols Forsake their own Mercy. | 8Those who cling to worthless idols forsake His loving devotion. |
But I will sacrifice to You With the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay what I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD.” | 9But I, with the voice of thanksgiving, will sacrifice to You. I will fulfill what I have vowed. Salvation is from the LORD!” |
So the LORD spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land. | 10And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land. |
