| 1Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the fish’s belly. | 1Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the stomach of the fish |
| 2And he said: “I cried out to the LORD because of my affliction, And He answered me. “Out of the belly of Sheol I cried, And You heard my voice. | 2and said, "I called out to the LORD from my distress, and he answered me; from the belly of Sheol I cried out for help, and you heard my prayer. |
| 3For You cast me into the deep, Into the heart of the seas, And the floods surrounded me; All Your billows and Your waves passed over me. | 3You threw me into the deep waters, into the middle of the sea; the ocean current engulfed me; all the mighty waves you sent swept over me. |
| 4Then I said, ‘I have been cast out of Your sight; Yet I will look again toward Your holy temple.’ | 4I thought I had been banished from your sight, that I would never again see your holy temple! |
| 5The waters surrounded me, even to my soul; The deep closed around me; Weeds were wrapped around my head. | 5Water engulfed me up to my neck; the deep ocean surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head. |
| 6I went down to the moorings of the mountains; The earth with its bars closed behind me forever; Yet You have brought up my life from the pit, O LORD, my God. | 6I went down to the very bottoms of the mountains; the gates of the netherworld barred me in forever; but you brought me up from the Pit, O LORD, my God. |
| 7“When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the LORD; And my prayer went up to You, Into Your holy temple. | 7When my life was ebbing away, I called out to the LORD, and my prayer came to your holy temple. |
| 8“Those who regard worthless idols Forsake their own Mercy. | 8Those who worship worthless idols forfeit the mercy that could be theirs. |
| 9But I will sacrifice to You With the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay what I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD.” | 9But as for me, I promise to offer a sacrifice to you with a public declaration of praise; I will surely do what I have promised. Salvation belongs to the LORD!" |
| 10So the LORD spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land. | 10Then the LORD commanded the fish and it disgorged Jonah on dry land. |
