New King James Version | Holman Christian Standard Bible |
There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. | 1Therefore, no condemnation now exists for those in Christ Jesus, |
For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. | 2because the Spirit's law of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. |
For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, | 3What the law could not do since it was limited by the flesh, God did. He condemned sin in the flesh by sending His own Son in flesh like ours under sin's domain, and as a sin offering, |
that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. | 4in order that the law's requirement would be accomplished in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. |
For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. | 5For those who live according to the flesh think about the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, about the things of the Spirit. |
For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. | 6For the mind-set of the flesh is death, but the mind-set of the Spirit is life and peace. |
Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. | 7For the mind-set of the flesh is hostile to God because it does not submit itself to God's law, for it is unable to do so. |
So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God. | 8Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. |
But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His. | 9You, however, are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, since the Spirit of God lives in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. |
And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. | 10Now if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. |
But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you. | 11And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you, then He who raised Christ from the dead will also bring your mortal bodies to life through His Spirit who lives in you. |
Therefore, brethren, we are debtors—not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. | 12So then, brothers, we are not obligated to the flesh to live according to the flesh, |
For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. | 13for if you live according to the flesh, you are going to die. But if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. |
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. | 14All those led by God's Spirit are God's sons. |
For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” | 15For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry out, "Abba, Father!" |
The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, | 16The Spirit Himself testifies together with our spirit that we are God's children, |
and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together. | 17and if children, also heirs--heirs of God and coheirs with Christ--seeing that we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him. |
For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. | 18For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is going to be revealed to us. |
For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God. | 19For the creation eagerly waits with anticipation for God's sons to be revealed. |
For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; | 20For the creation was subjected to futility--not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it--in the hope |
because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. | 21that the creation itself will also be set free from the bondage of corruption into the glorious freedom of God's children. |
For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now. | 22For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together with labor pains until now. |
Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body. | 23And not only that, but we ourselves who have the Spirit as the firstfruits--we also groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. |
For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees? | 24Now in this hope we were saved, yet hope that is seen is not hope, because who hopes for what he sees? |
But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance. | 25But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with patience. |
Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. | 26In the same way the Spirit also joins to help in our weakness, because we do not know what to pray for as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with unspoken groanings. |
Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. | 27And He who searches the hearts knows the Spirit's mind-set, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. |
And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. | 28We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God: those who are called according to His purpose. |
For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. | 29For those He foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brothers. |
Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified. | 30And those He predestined, He also called; and those He called, He also justified; and those He justified, He also glorified. |
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? | 31What then are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who is against us? |
He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? | 32He did not even spare His own Son but offered Him up for us all; how will He not also with Him grant us everything? |
Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. | 33Who can bring an accusation against God's elect? God is the One who justifies. |
Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. | 34Who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is the One who died, but even more, has been raised; He also is at the right hand of God and intercedes for us. |
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? | 35Who can separate us from the love of Christ? Can affliction or anguish or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? |
As it is written: “For Your sake we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.” | 36As it is written: Because of You we are being put to death all day long; we are counted as sheep to be slaughtered. |
Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. | 37No, in all these things we are more than victorious through Him who loved us. |
For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, | 38For I am persuaded that not even death or life, angels or rulers, things present or things to come, hostile powers, |
nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. | 39height or depth, or any other created thing will have the power to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord! |
