| 1Simon Peter, a bondservant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have obtained like precious faith with us by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ: | 1From: Simeon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus, the Messiah. To: Those who have received faith that is as valuable as ours through the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus the Messiah. |
| 2Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, | 2May grace and peace be yours in abundance through full knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord! |
| 3as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, | 3His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through the full knowledge of the one who called us by his own glory and excellence. |
| 4by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. | 4Through these he has given us his precious and wonderful promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, seeing that you have escaped the corruption that is in the world caused by evil desires. |
| 5But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, | 5For this very reason, you must make every effort to supplement your faith with moral character, your moral character with knowledge, |
| 6to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, | 6your knowledge with self-control, your self-control with endurance, your endurance with godliness, |
| 7to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. | 7your godliness with brotherly kindness, and your brotherly kindness with love. |
| 8For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. | 8For if you possess these qualities, and if they continue to increase among you, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in attaining a full knowledge of our Lord Jesus, the Messiah. |
| 9For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins. | 9For the person who lacks these qualities is blind and shortsighted, and has forgotten the cleansing that he has received from his past sins. |
| 10Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble; | 10So then, my brothers, be all the more eager to make your calling and election certain, for if you keep on doing this you will never fail. |
| 11for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. | 11For in this way you will be generously granted entry into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus, the Messiah. |
| 12For this reason I will not be negligent to remind you always of these things, though you know and are established in the present truth. | 12Therefore, I intend to keep on reminding you about these things, even though you already know them and are firmly established in the truth that you now have. |
| 13Yes, I think it is right, as long as I am in this tent, to stir you up by reminding you, | 13Yet I think it is right to refresh your memory as long as I am living in this bodily tent, |
| 14knowing that shortly I must put off my tent, just as our Lord Jesus Christ showed me. | 14because I know that the removal of my bodily tent will come soon, as indeed our Lord Jesus, the Messiah, has shown me. |
| 15Moreover I will be careful to ensure that you always have a reminder of these things after my decease. | 15And I will make every effort to see that you will always remember these things after I am gone. |
| 16For we did not follow cunningly devised fables when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of His majesty. | 16When we told you about the power and coming of our Lord Jesus, the Messiah, we did not follow any clever myths. Rather, we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. |
| 17For He received from God the Father honor and glory when such a voice came to Him from the Excellent Glory: “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” | 17For he received honor and glory from God the Father when these words from the Majestic Glory were spoken about him: "This is my Son, whom I love. I am pleased with him." |
| 18And we heard this voice which came from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain. | 18We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the holy mountain. |
| 19And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts; | 19Therefore we regard the message of the prophets as confirmed beyond doubt, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a lamp that is shining in a gloomy place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. |
| 20knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, | 20First of all, you must understand this: No prophecy in Scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation, |
| 21for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. | 21because no prophecy ever originated through a human decision. Instead, men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. |
