So all Israel was recorded by genealogies, and indeed, they were inscribed in the book of the kings of Israel. They were taken captive to Babylon because of their unfaithfulness.
And the first inhabitants who dwelt in their possessions in their cities were Israelites, priests, Levites, and the Nethinim.2Now the first to resettle on their own property in their own towns were some Israelites, priests, Levites and temple servants.

And the gatekeepers were Shallum, Akkub, Talmon, Ahiman, and their brethren. Shallum was the chief.17The gatekeepers: Shallum, Akkub, Talmon, Ahiman and their fellow Levites, Shallum their chief
Until then they had been gatekeepers for the camps of the children of Levi at the King’s Gate on the east.18being stationed at the King's Gate on the east, up to the present time. These were the gatekeepers belonging to the camp of the Levites.
Shallum the son of Kore, the son of Ebiasaph, the son of Korah, and his brethren, from his father’s house, the Korahites, were in charge of the work of the service, gatekeepers of the tabernacle. Their fathers had been keepers of the entrance to the camp of the LORD.19Shallum son of Kore, the son of Ebiasaph, the son of Korah, and his fellow gatekeepers from his family (the Korahites) were responsible for guarding the thresholds of the tent just as their ancestors had been responsible for guarding the entrance to the dwelling of the LORD.
And Phinehas the son of Eleazar had been the officer over them in time past; the LORD was with him.20In earlier times Phinehas son of Eleazar was the official in charge of the gatekeepers, and the LORD was with him.
Zechariah the son of Meshelemiah was keeper of the door of the tabernacle of meeting.21Zechariah son of Meshelemiah was the gatekeeper at the entrance to the tent of meeting.
All those chosen as gatekeepers were two hundred and twelve. They were recorded by their genealogy, in their villages. David and Samuel the seer had appointed them to their trusted office.22Altogether, those chosen to be gatekeepers at the thresholds numbered 212. They were registered by genealogy in their villages. The gatekeepers had been assigned to their positions of trust by David and Samuel the seer.
So they and their children were in charge of the gates of the house of the LORD, the house of the tabernacle, by assignment.23They and their descendants were in charge of guarding the gates of the house of the LORD--the house called the tent of meeting.
The gatekeepers were assigned to the four directions: the east, west, north, and south.24The gatekeepers were on the four sides: east, west, north and south.
And their brethren in their villages had to come with them from time to time for seven days.25Their fellow Levites in their villages had to come from time to time and share their duties for seven-day periods.
For in this trusted office were four chief gatekeepers; they were Levites. And they had charge over the chambers and treasuries of the house of God.26But the four principal gatekeepers, who were Levites, were entrusted with the responsibility for the rooms and treasuries in the house of God.
And they lodged all around the house of God because they had the responsibility, and they were in charge of opening it every morning.27They would spend the night stationed around the house of God, because they had to guard it; and they had charge of the key for opening it each morning.
Now some of them were in charge of the serving vessels, for they brought them in and took them out by count.28Some of them were in charge of the articles used in the temple service; they counted them when they were brought in and when they were taken out.
Some of them were appointed over the furnishings and over all the implements of the sanctuary, and over the fine flour and the wine and the oil and the incense and the spices.29Others were assigned to take care of the furnishings and all the other articles of the sanctuary, as well as the special flour and wine, and the olive oil, incense and spices.
And some of the sons of the priests made the ointment of the spices.30But some of the priests took care of mixing the spices.
Mattithiah of the Levites, the firstborn of Shallum the Korahite, had the trusted office over the things that were baked in the pans.31A Levite named Mattithiah, the firstborn son of Shallum the Korahite, was entrusted with the responsibility for baking the offering bread.
And some of their brethren of the sons of the Kohathites were in charge of preparing the showbread for every Sabbath.32Some of the Kohathites, their fellow Levites, were in charge of preparing for every Sabbath the bread set out on the table.
These are the singers, heads of the fathers’ houses of the Levites, who lodged in the chambers, and were free from other duties; for they were employed in that work day and night.33Those who were musicians, heads of Levite families, stayed in the rooms of the temple and were exempt from other duties because they were responsible for the work day and night.
These heads of the fathers’ houses of the Levites were heads throughout their generations. They dwelt at Jerusalem.34All these were heads of Levite families, chiefs as listed in their genealogy, and they lived in Jerusalem.
