Adaiah son of Jeroham
Adaiah is a name meaning "Yahweh has adorned" or "Yahweh has made." The mention of Adaiah here places him within the priestly lineage, which is significant in the context of 1 Chronicles, as the book often emphasizes the importance of genealogies and the roles of the Levites and priests. Jeroham, his father, is a name that appears in various genealogies, indicating a family of some standing within the priestly community.

the son of Pashhur
Pashhur is a name associated with a priestly family. In Jeremiah 20:1-6, a Pashhur is mentioned as a priest who opposed Jeremiah, though it is unclear if this is the same individual. The name means "split" or "cleft," and it is significant in the context of priestly duties and temple service.

the son of Malchijah
Malchijah, meaning "my king is Yahweh," is a name that appears multiple times in the Old Testament, often associated with priestly or Levitical lines. This connection underscores the importance of maintaining a pure lineage for those serving in the temple, as seen in Ezra 10:25, where Malchijah is listed among those who had taken foreign wives and were called to repentance.

Maasai son of Adiel
Maasai, meaning "work of Yahweh," is another priestly figure, emphasizing the divine calling and service of the priesthood. Adiel, meaning "ornament of God," further highlights the heritage and responsibility of those in the priestly line to reflect God's glory and holiness.

the son of Jahzerah
Jahzerah is a less common name, and its meaning is not entirely clear, though it may relate to "whom God has helped." This name, like others in the genealogy, serves to establish the legitimacy and continuity of the priestly line, which was crucial for maintaining the religious and social order in Israel.

the son of Meshullam
Meshullam, meaning "friend" or "ally," is a name that appears frequently in the genealogies of the post-exilic community. This reflects the restoration and rebuilding efforts of the community, as seen in Nehemiah 3:4, where a Meshullam is involved in repairing the walls of Jerusalem.

the son of Meshillemith
Meshillemith, meaning "recompense" or "reward," is a name that underscores the theme of divine justice and reward, which is a recurring theme in the Chronicles. The genealogical record serves as a reminder of God's faithfulness to His promises and the importance of faithfulness in return.

the son of Immer
Immer is a significant priestly family name, as seen in Jeremiah 20:1, where Pashhur, a son of Immer, is mentioned. The Immer family was one of the 24 priestly divisions established by King David, as recorded in 1 Chronicles 24:14. This connection highlights the structured and organized nature of temple service and the continuity of worship practices from David's time through the post-exilic period.

What Does 1 Chronicles 9:12 Mean
1 Chronicles 9 : 12

“and Adaiah son of Jeroham, the son of Pashhur, the son of Malchijah; and Maasai son of Adiel, the son of Jahzerah, the son of Meshullam, the son of Meshillemith, the son of Immer.”

Adaiah son of Jeroham

• Adaiah is listed among the priests who resettled in Jerusalem after the exile (compare Nehemiah 11 : 10–12).

• His presence shows that priestly service, interrupted by judgment, has been restored exactly as God promised (Jeremiah 33 : 17–18).

• The Chronicler highlights individuals like Adaiah to remind returning Israelites—and us—that God keeps meticulous record of His servants (Malachi 3 : 16).

Pashhur, the son of Malchijah

• Jeroham’s father Pashhur echoes the better-known priest Pashhur who resisted Jeremiah (Jeremiah 20 : 1–6), illustrating that a family once marked by rebellion can still yield faithful descendants.

• Malchijah links the line back another generation, emphasizing continuity all the way to pre-exilic temple service (2 Kings 25 : 18).

• These names assure readers that the restored priesthood rests on an unbroken, God-ordained lineage (Exodus 29 : 9).

Maasai son of Adiel

• Alongside Adaiah, Maasai represents a second branch of priests now living inside Jerusalem’s walls (Nehemiah 11 : 12).

• Two distinct families standing shoulder to shoulder underscore the unity God expects among servants who share the same calling (Psalm 133 : 1).

• Their placement in the city fulfills God’s instruction that priests “come near to Me to minister to Me” (Ezekiel 44 : 15).

Jahzerah, the son of Meshullam

• Adiel’s father Jahzerah and grandfather Meshullam take the genealogy further back so the Chronicler’s audience can trace God’s faithfulness through multiple generations (Deuteronomy 7 : 9).

• Meshullam appears elsewhere as a priestly gatekeeper (1 Chronicles 9 : 17), highlighting varied but complementary roles within temple life (1 Corinthians 12 : 4–6).

• The pattern reminds modern readers that every believing generation is responsible to pass on faithful service to the next (2 Timothy 2 : 2).

Meshillemith, the son of Immer

• Meshillemith and his father Immer connect Maasai’s line to the prominent house of Immer, one of the original priestly families that returned with Zerubbabel (Ezra 2 : 37; 10 : 20).

• Immer’s name also surfaces in Jeremiah 20 : 1 (Pashhur son of Immer), linking pre- and post-exilic history.

• By naming Immer last, the Chronicler circles back to the priestly clan lists of 1 Chronicles 24, assuring readers that the restored worship mirrors God’s original pattern (Hebrews 8 : 5).

summary

1 Chronicles 9 : 12 is far more than a list of hard-to-pronounce names. It testifies that after judgment and exile, God faithfully re-established the priesthood on its original foundations. Two priestly branches—those of Pashhur and of Immer—now stand restored in Jerusalem through men like Adaiah and Maasai. Each generation named affirms the Lord’s meticulous care to preserve His servants, demonstrate covenant faithfulness, and ensure continual worship according to His Word.

(12) And Adaiah the son of Jeroham.--Nehemiah 11:12 runs: "And their brethren, doers of the work of the house, 822; and Adaiah son of Jeroham, son of Pelaliah, son of Amzi, son of Zechariah, son of Pashur, son of Malchijah." Thus the line of Adaiah as given there exactly corresponds with the present passage, save that it inserts three names here wanting between Jerobam and Pashur: another illustration of the freedom of the compiler in dealing with these lists.

Malchijah was the fifth of the twenty-four priestly classes.

Maasiai the son of Adiel . . . son of Immer.--Immer was the sixteenth course of the priests. The parallel (Nehemiah 11:13) reads: "And his brethren, heads of clans, 242; and Amashsai son of Azareel, son of Ahzai, son of Meshillemoth, son of Immer, and their brethren, mighty men of valour, 128; and their overseer was Zabdiel son of Haggedolim." Amashsai and Maasiai are variants of the same name, and perhaps both bad spellings of Amasai (1Chronicles 6:35; 1Chronicles 12:18). Adiel may well be a mistake for Azareel. Jahzerah and Ahzai are evidently two forms of one name, Ahzai,--Ahaziah being perhaps more correct. Meshullam in our line is either an additional link, or a copyist's anticipation of part of the following name. The line in Nehemiah is therefore originally identical with the present. 1Chronicles 9:10-12 show that at the date of the present register three entire courses of the priests, and two clans representing two other courses, as well as the ruler or president of the Temple, dwelt in Jerusalem. . . .
