New Living Translation | Berean Study Bible |
“When Israel was a child, I loved him, and I called my son out of Egypt. | 1When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called My son. |
But the more I called to him, the farther he moved from me, offering sacrifices to the images of Baal and burning incense to idols. | 2But the more I called Israel, the farther they departed from Me. They sacrificed to the Baals and burned incense to carved images. |
I myself taught Israel how to walk, leading him along by the hand. But he doesn’t know or even care that it was I who took care of him. | 3It was I who taught Ephraim to walk, taking them in My arms, but they never realized that it was I who healed them. |
I led Israel along with my ropes of kindness and love. I lifted the yoke from his neck, and I myself stooped to feed him. | 4I led them with cords of kindness, with ropes of love; I lifted the yoke from their necks and bent down to feed them. |
“But since my people refuse to return to me, they will return to Egypt and will be forced to serve Assyria. | 5Will they not return to the land of Egypt and be ruled by Assyria because they refused to repent? |
War will swirl through their cities; their enemies will crash through their gates. They will destroy them, trapping them in their own evil plans. | 6A sword will flash through their cities; it will destroy the bars of their gates and consume them in their own plans. |
For my people are determined to desert me. They call me the Most High, but they don’t truly honor me. | 7My people are bent on turning from Me. Though they call to the Most High, He will by no means exalt them. |
“Oh, how can I give you up, Israel? How can I let you go? How can I destroy you like Admah or demolish you like Zeboiim? My heart is torn within me, and my compassion overflows. | 8How could I give you up, O Ephraim? How could I surrender you, O Israel? How could I make you like Admah? How could I treat you like Zeboiim? My heart is turned within Me; My compassion is stirred! |
No, I will not unleash my fierce anger. I will not completely destroy Israel, for I am God and not a mere mortal. I am the Holy One living among you, and I will not come to destroy. | 9I will not execute the full fury of My anger; I will not turn back to destroy Ephraim. For I am God and not man—the Holy One among you—and I will not come in wrath. |
For someday the people will follow me. I, the LORD, will roar like a lion. And when I roar, my people will return trembling from the west. | 10They will walk after the LORD; He will roar like a lion. When He roars, His children will come trembling from the west. |
Like a flock of birds, they will come from Egypt. Trembling like doves, they will return from Assyria. And I will bring them home again,” says the LORD. Charges against Israel and Judah | 11They will come trembling like birds from Egypt and like doves from the land of Assyria. Then I will settle them in their homes, declares the LORD. |
Israel surrounds me with lies and deceit, but Judah still obeys God and is faithful to the Holy One. | 12Ephraim surrounds Me with lies, the house of Israel with deceit; but Judah still walks with God and is faithful to the Holy One. |
