New Living Translation | New International Version |
“When Israel was a child, I loved him, and I called my son out of Egypt. | 1"When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son. |
But the more I called to him, the farther he moved from me, offering sacrifices to the images of Baal and burning incense to idols. | 2But the more they were called, the more they went away from me. They sacrificed to the Baals and they burned incense to images. |
I myself taught Israel how to walk, leading him along by the hand. But he doesn’t know or even care that it was I who took care of him. | 3It was I who taught Ephraim to walk, taking them by the arms; but they did not realize it was I who healed them. |
I led Israel along with my ropes of kindness and love. I lifted the yoke from his neck, and I myself stooped to feed him. | 4I led them with cords of human kindness, with ties of love. To them I was like one who lifts a little child to the cheek, and I bent down to feed them. |
“But since my people refuse to return to me, they will return to Egypt and will be forced to serve Assyria. | 5"Will they not return to Egypt and will not Assyria rule over them because they refuse to repent? |
War will swirl through their cities; their enemies will crash through their gates. They will destroy them, trapping them in their own evil plans. | 6A sword will flash in their cities; it will devour their false prophets and put an end to their plans. |
For my people are determined to desert me. They call me the Most High, but they don’t truly honor me. | 7My people are determined to turn from me. Even though they call me God Most High, I will by no means exalt them. |
“Oh, how can I give you up, Israel? How can I let you go? How can I destroy you like Admah or demolish you like Zeboiim? My heart is torn within me, and my compassion overflows. | 8"How can I give you up, Ephraim? How can I hand you over, Israel? How can I treat you like Admah? How can I make you like Zeboyim? My heart is changed within me; all my compassion is aroused. |
No, I will not unleash my fierce anger. I will not completely destroy Israel, for I am God and not a mere mortal. I am the Holy One living among you, and I will not come to destroy. | 9I will not carry out my fierce anger, nor will I devastate Ephraim again. For I am God, and not a man-- the Holy One among you. I will not come against their cities. |
For someday the people will follow me. I, the LORD, will roar like a lion. And when I roar, my people will return trembling from the west. | 10They will follow the LORD; he will roar like a lion. When he roars, his children will come trembling from the west. |
Like a flock of birds, they will come from Egypt. Trembling like doves, they will return from Assyria. And I will bring them home again,” says the LORD. Charges against Israel and Judah | 11They will come from Egypt, trembling like sparrows, from Assyria, fluttering like doves. I will settle them in their homes," declares the LORD. |
Israel surrounds me with lies and deceit, but Judah still obeys God and is faithful to the Holy One. | 12Ephraim has surrounded me with lies, Israel with deceit. And Judah is unruly against God, even against the faithful Holy One. |
