New Living Translation | Christian Standard Bible |
“When Israel was a child, I loved him, and I called my son out of Egypt. | 1When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son. |
But the more I called to him, the farther he moved from me, offering sacrifices to the images of Baal and burning incense to idols. | 2Israel called to the Egyptians even as Israel was leaving them. They kept sacrificing to the Baals and burning offerings to idols. |
I myself taught Israel how to walk, leading him along by the hand. But he doesn’t know or even care that it was I who took care of him. | 3It was I who taught Ephraim to walk, taking them by the hand, but they never knew that I healed them. |
I led Israel along with my ropes of kindness and love. I lifted the yoke from his neck, and I myself stooped to feed him. | 4I led them with human cords, with ropes of love. To them I was like one who eases the yoke from their jaws; I bent down to give them food. |
“But since my people refuse to return to me, they will return to Egypt and will be forced to serve Assyria. | 5Israel will not return to the land of Egypt and Assyria will be his king, because they refused to repent. |
War will swirl through their cities; their enemies will crash through their gates. They will destroy them, trapping them in their own evil plans. | 6A sword will whirl through his cities; it will destroy and devour the bars of his gates, because of their schemes. |
For my people are determined to desert me. They call me the Most High, but they don’t truly honor me. | 7My people are bent on turning from me. Though they call to him on high, he will not exalt them at all. |
“Oh, how can I give you up, Israel? How can I let you go? How can I destroy you like Admah or demolish you like Zeboiim? My heart is torn within me, and my compassion overflows. | 8How can I give you up, Ephraim? How can I surrender you, Israel? How can I make you like Admah? How can I treat you like Zeboiim? I have had a change of heart; my compassion is stirred! |
No, I will not unleash my fierce anger. I will not completely destroy Israel, for I am God and not a mere mortal. I am the Holy One living among you, and I will not come to destroy. | 9I will not vent the full fury of my anger; I will not turn back to destroy Ephraim. For I am God and not man, the Holy One among you; I will not come in rage. |
For someday the people will follow me. I, the LORD, will roar like a lion. And when I roar, my people will return trembling from the west. | 10They will follow the LORD; he will roar like a lion. When he roars, his children will come trembling from the west. |
Like a flock of birds, they will come from Egypt. Trembling like doves, they will return from Assyria. And I will bring them home again,” says the LORD. Charges against Israel and Judah | 11They will be roused like birds from Egypt and like doves from the land of Assyria. Then I will settle them in their homes. This is the LORD's declaration. |
Israel surrounds me with lies and deceit, but Judah still obeys God and is faithful to the Holy One. | 12Ephraim surrounds me with lies, the house of Israel, with deceit. Judah still wanders with God and is faithful to the holy ones. |
