Psalm 39
NLT Parallel BSB [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
New Living TranslationBerean Study Bible
I said to myself, “I will watch what I do and not sin in what I say. I will hold my tongue when the ungodly are around me.”1For the choirmaster. For Jeduthun. A Psalm of David. I said, “I will watch my ways so that I will not sin with my tongue; I will guard my mouth with a muzzle as long as the wicked are present.”
But as I stood there in silence— not even speaking of good things— the turmoil within me grew worse.2I was speechless and still; I remained silent, even from speaking good, and my sorrow was stirred.
The more I thought about it, the hotter I got, igniting a fire of words:3My heart grew hot within me; as I mused, the fire burned. Then I spoke with my tongue:
“LORD, remind me how brief my time on earth will be. Remind me that my days are numbered— how fleeting my life is.4“Show me, O LORD, my end and the measure of my days. Let me know how fleeting my life is.
You have made my life no longer than the width of my hand. My entire lifetime is just a moment to you; at best, each of us is but a breath.” Interlude5You, indeed, have made my days as handbreadths, and my lifetime as nothing before You. Truly each man at his best exists as but a breath. Selah
We are merely moving shadows, and all our busy rushing ends in nothing. We heap up wealth, not knowing who will spend it.6Surely every man goes about like a phantom; surely he bustles in vain; he heaps up riches not knowing who will haul them away.
And so, Lord, where do I put my hope? My only hope is in you.7And now, O Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in You.
Rescue me from my rebellion. Do not let fools mock me.8Deliver me from all my transgressions; do not make me the reproach of fools.
I am silent before you; I won’t say a word, for my punishment is from you.9I have become mute; I do not open my mouth because of what You have done.
But please stop striking me! I am exhausted by the blows from your hand.10Remove Your scourge from me; I am perishing by the force of Your hand.
When you discipline us for our sins, you consume like a moth what is precious to us. Each of us is but a breath. Interlude11You discipline and correct a man for his iniquity, consuming like a moth what he holds dear; surely each man is but a vapor. Selah
Hear my prayer, O LORD! Listen to my cries for help! Don’t ignore my tears. For I am your guest— a traveler passing through, as my ancestors were before me.12Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear to my cry for help; do not be deaf to my weeping. For I am a foreigner dwelling with You, a stranger like all my fathers.
Leave me alone so I can smile again before I am gone and exist no more.13Turn Your gaze away from me, that I may again be cheered before I depart and am no more.”
