New Living TranslationBerean Study Bible
O LORD, God of my salvation, I cry out to you by day. I come to you at night.1A song. A Psalm of the sons of Korah. For the choirmaster. According to Mahalath Leannoth. A Maskil of Heman the Ezrahite. O LORD, the God of my salvation, day and night I cry out before You.
Now hear my prayer; listen to my cry.2May my prayer come before You; incline Your ear to my cry.
For my life is full of troubles, and death draws near.3For my soul is full of troubles, and my life draws near to Sheol.
I am as good as dead, like a strong man with no strength left.4I am counted among those descending to the Pit. I am like a man without strength.
They have left me among the dead, and I lie like a corpse in a grave. I am forgotten, cut off from your care.5I am forsaken among the dead, like the slain who lie in the grave, whom You remember no more, who are cut off from Your care.
You have thrown me into the lowest pit, into the darkest depths.6You have laid me in the lowest Pit, in the darkest of the depths.
Your anger weighs me down; with wave after wave you have engulfed me. Interlude7Your wrath weighs heavily upon me; all Your waves have submerged me. Selah
You have driven my friends away by making me repulsive to them. I am in a trap with no way of escape.8You have removed my friends from me; You have made me repulsive to them; I am confined and cannot escape.
My eyes are blinded by my tears. Each day I beg for your help, O LORD; I lift my hands to you for mercy.9My eyes grow dim with grief. I call to You daily, O LORD; I spread out my hands to You.
Are your wonderful deeds of any use to the dead? Do the dead rise up and praise you? Interlude10Do You work wonders for the dead? Do departed spirits rise up to praise You? Selah
Can those in the grave declare your unfailing love? Can they proclaim your faithfulness in the place of destruction?11Can Your loving devotion be proclaimed in the grave, Your faithfulness in Abaddon?
Can the darkness speak of your wonderful deeds? Can anyone in the land of forgetfulness talk about your righteousness?12Will Your wonders be known in the darkness, or Your righteousness in the land of oblivion?
O LORD, I cry out to you. I will keep on pleading day by day.13But to You, O LORD, I cry for help; in the morning my prayer comes before You.
O LORD, why do you reject me? Why do you turn your face from me?14Why, O LORD, do You reject me? Why do You hide Your face from me?
I have been sick and close to death since my youth. I stand helpless and desperate before your terrors.15From my youth I was afflicted and near death. I have borne Your terrors; I am in despair.
Your fierce anger has overwhelmed me. Your terrors have paralyzed me.16Your wrath has swept over me; Your terrors have destroyed me.
They swirl around me like floodwaters all day long. They have engulfed me completely.17All day long they engulf me like water; they enclose me on every side.
You have taken away my companions and loved ones. Darkness is my closest friend.18You have removed my beloved and my friend; darkness is my closest companion.
