| 1Job continued speaking: | 1Job continued his discourse, saying: |
| 2“I vow by the living God, who has taken away my rights, by the Almighty who has embittered my soul— | 2As God lives, who has deprived me of justice, and the Almighty who has made me bitter, |
| 3As long as I live, while I have breath from God, | 3as long as my breath is still in me and the breath from God remains in my nostrils, |
| 4my lips will speak no evil, and my tongue will speak no lies. | 4my lips will not speak unjustly, and my tongue will not utter deceit. |
| 5I will never concede that you are right; I will defend my integrity until I die. | 5I will never affirm that you are right. I will maintain my integrity until I die. |
| 6I will maintain my innocence without wavering. My conscience is clear for as long as I live. | 6I will cling to my righteousness and never let it go. My conscience will not accuse me as long as I live! |
| 7“May my enemy be punished like the wicked, my adversary like those who do evil. | 7May my enemy be like the wicked and my opponent like the unjust. |
| 8For what hope do the godless have when God cuts them off and takes away their life? | 8For what hope does the godless person have when he is cut off, when God takes away his life? |
| 9Will God listen to their cry when trouble comes upon them? | 9Will God hear his cry when distress comes on him? |
| 10Can they take delight in the Almighty? Can they call to God at any time? | 10Will he delight in the Almighty? Will he call on God at all times? |
| 11I will teach you about God’s power. I will not conceal anything concerning the Almighty. | 11I will teach you about God's power. I will not conceal what the Almighty has planned. |
| 12But you have seen all this, yet you say all these useless things to me. | 12All of you have seen this for yourselves, why do you keep up this empty talk? |
| 13“This is what the wicked will receive from God; this is their inheritance from the Almighty. | 13This is a wicked man's lot from God, the inheritance the ruthless receive from the Almighty. |
| 14They may have many children, but the children will die in war or starve to death. | 14Even if his children increase, they are destined for the sword; his descendants will never have enough food. |
| 15Those who survive will die of a plague, and not even their widows will mourn them. | 15Those who survive him will be buried by the plague, yet their widows will not weep for them. |
| 16“Evil people may have piles of money and may store away mounds of clothing. | 16Though he piles up silver like dust and heaps up fine clothing like clay-- |
| 17But the righteous will wear that clothing, and the innocent will divide that money. | 17he may heap it up, but the righteous will wear it, and the innocent will divide up his silver. |
| 18The wicked build houses as fragile as a spider’s web, as flimsy as a shelter made of branches. | 18The house he built is like a moth's cocoon or a shelter set up by a watchman. |
| 19The wicked go to bed rich but wake to find that all their wealth is gone. | 19He lies down wealthy, but will do so no more; when he opens his eyes, it is gone. |
| 20Terror overwhelms them like a flood, and they are blown away in the storms of the night. | 20Terrors overtake him like a flood; a storm wind sweeps him away at night. |
| 21The east wind carries them away, and they are gone. It sweeps them away. | 21An east wind picks him up, and he is gone; it carries him away from his place. |
| 22It whirls down on them without mercy. They struggle to flee from its power. | 22It blasts at him without mercy, while he flees desperately from its force. |
| 23But everyone jeers at them and mocks them. | 23It claps its hands at him and scoffs at him from its place. |
