Job continued speaking: | 1Then Job continued his discourse and said, |
“I vow by the living God, who has taken away my rights, by the Almighty who has embittered my soul— | 2"As God lives, who has taken away my right, And the Almighty, who has embittered my soul, |
As long as I live, while I have breath from God, | 3For as long as life is in me, And the breath of God is in my nostrils, |
my lips will speak no evil, and my tongue will speak no lies. | 4My lips certainly will not speak unjustly, Nor will my tongue mutter deceit. |
I will never concede that you are right; I will defend my integrity until I die. | 5"Far be it from me that I should declare you right; Till I die I will not put away my integrity from me. |
I will maintain my innocence without wavering. My conscience is clear for as long as I live. | 6"I hold fast my righteousness and will not let it go. My heart does not reproach any of my days. |
“May my enemy be punished like the wicked, my adversary like those who do evil. | 7"May my enemy be as the wicked And my opponent as the unjust. |
For what hope do the godless have when God cuts them off and takes away their life? | 8"For what is the hope of the godless when he is cut off, When God requires his life? |
Will God listen to their cry when trouble comes upon them? | 9"Will God hear his cry When distress comes upon him? |
Can they take delight in the Almighty? Can they call to God at any time? | 10"Will he take delight in the Almighty? Will he call on God at all times? |
I will teach you about God’s power. I will not conceal anything concerning the Almighty. | 11"I will instruct you in the power of God; What is with the Almighty I will not conceal. |
But you have seen all this, yet you say all these useless things to me. | 12"Behold, all of you have seen it; Why then do you act foolishly? |
“This is what the wicked will receive from God; this is their inheritance from the Almighty. | 13"This is the portion of a wicked man from God, And the inheritance which tyrants receive from the Almighty. |
They may have many children, but the children will die in war or starve to death. | 14"Though his sons are many, they are destined for the sword; And his descendants will not be satisfied with bread. |
Those who survive will die of a plague, and not even their widows will mourn them. | 15"His survivors will be buried because of the plague, And their widows will not be able to weep. |
“Evil people may have piles of money and may store away mounds of clothing. | 16"Though he piles up silver like dust And prepares garments as plentiful as the clay, |
But the righteous will wear that clothing, and the innocent will divide that money. | 17He may prepare it, but the just will wear it And the innocent will divide the silver. |
The wicked build houses as fragile as a spider’s web, as flimsy as a shelter made of branches. | 18"He has built his house like the spider's web, Or as a hut which the watchman has made. |
The wicked go to bed rich but wake to find that all their wealth is gone. | 19"He lies down rich, but never again; He opens his eyes, and it is no longer. |
Terror overwhelms them like a flood, and they are blown away in the storms of the night. | 20"Terrors overtake him like a flood; A tempest steals him away in the night. |
The east wind carries them away, and they are gone. It sweeps them away. | 21"The east wind carries him away, and he is gone, For it whirls him away from his place. |
It whirls down on them without mercy. They struggle to flee from its power. | 22"For it will hurl at him without sparing; He will surely try to flee from its power. |
But everyone jeers at them and mocks them. | 23"Men will clap their hands at him And will hiss him from his place. |
