| 1Then the fifth angel blew his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen to earth from the sky, and he was given the key to the shaft of the bottomless pit. | 1The fifth angel blew his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from heaven to earth. The key for the shaft to the abyss was given to him. |
| 2When he opened it, smoke poured out as though from a huge furnace, and the sunlight and air turned dark from the smoke. | 2He opened the shaft to the abyss, and smoke came up out of the shaft like smoke from a great furnace so that the sun and the air were darkened by the smoke from the shaft. |
| 3Then locusts came from the smoke and descended on the earth, and they were given power to sting like scorpions. | 3Then locusts came out of the smoke on to the earth, and power was given to them like the power that scorpions have on the earth. |
| 4They were told not to harm the grass or plants or trees, but only the people who did not have the seal of God on their foreheads. | 4They were told not to harm the grass of the earth, or any green plant, or any tree, but only those people who do not have God's seal on their foreheads. |
| 5They were told not to kill them but to torture them for five months with pain like the pain of a scorpion sting. | 5They were not permitted to kill them but were to torment them for five months; their torment is like the torment caused by a scorpion when it stings someone. |

| 12The first terror is past, but look, two more terrors are coming! The Sixth Trumpet Brings the Second Terror | 12The first woe has passed. There are still two more woes to come after this. |

| 18One-third of all the people on earth were killed by these three plagues—by the fire and smoke and burning sulfur that came from the mouths of the horses. | 18A third of the human race was killed by these three plagues--by the fire, the smoke, and the sulfur that came from their mouths. |
| 19Their power was in their mouths and in their tails. For their tails had heads like snakes, with the power to injure people. | 19For the power of the horses is in their mouths and in their tails, because their tails, which resemble snakes, have heads that inflict injury. |
| 20But the people who did not die in these plagues still refused to repent of their evil deeds and turn to God. They continued to worship demons and idols made of gold, silver, bronze, stone, and wood—idols that can neither see nor hear nor walk! | 20The rest of the people, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands to stop worshiping demons and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone, and wood, which cannot see, hear, or walk. |
| 21And they did not repent of their murders or their witchcraft or their sexual immorality or their thefts. | 21And they did not repent of their murders, their sorceries, their sexual immorality, or their thefts. |
