| 1Then the LORD said to Job, | 1And the LORD said to Job: |
| 2“Do you still want to argue with the Almighty? You are God’s critic, but do you have the answers?” Job Responds to the LORD | 2“Shall a faultfinder contend with the Almighty? He who argues with God, let him answer it.” |
| 3Then Job replied to the LORD, | 3Then Job answered the LORD and said: |
| 4“I am nothing—how could I ever find the answers? I will cover my mouth with my hand. | 4“Behold, I am of small account; what shall I answer you? I lay my hand on my mouth. |
| 5I have said too much already. I have nothing more to say.” The LORD Challenges Job Again | 5I have spoken once, and I will not answer; twice, but I will proceed no further.” |
| 6Then the LORD answered Job from the whirlwind: | 6Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind and said: |
| 7“Brace yourself like a man, because I have some questions for you, and you must answer them. | 7“Dress for action like a man; I will question you, and you make it known to me. |
| 8“Will you discredit my justice and condemn me just to prove you are right? | 8Will you even put me in the wrong? Will you condemn me that you may be in the right? |
| 9Are you as strong as God? Can you thunder with a voice like his? | 9Have you an arm like God, and can you thunder with a voice like his? |
| 10All right, put on your glory and splendor, your honor and majesty. | 10“Adorn yourself with majesty and dignity; clothe yourself with glory and splendor. |
| 11Give vent to your anger. Let it overflow against the proud. | 11Pour out the overflowings of your anger, and look on everyone who is proud and abase him. |
| 12Humiliate the proud with a glance; walk on the wicked where they stand. | 12Look on everyone who is proud and bring him low and tread down the wicked where they stand. |
| 13Bury them in the dust. Imprison them in the world of the dead. | 13Hide them all in the dust together; bind their faces in the world below. |
| 14Then even I would praise you, for your own strength would save you. | 14Then will I also acknowledge to you that your own right hand can save you. |
| 15“Take a look at Behemoth, which I made, just as I made you. It eats grass like an ox. | 15“Behold, Behemoth, which I made as I made you; he eats grass like an ox. |
| 16See its powerful loins and the muscles of its belly. | 16Behold, his strength in his loins, and his power in the muscles of his belly. |
| 17Its tail is as strong as a cedar. The sinews of its thighs are knit tightly together. | 17He makes his tail stiff like a cedar; the sinews of his thighs are knit together. |
| 18Its bones are tubes of bronze. Its limbs are bars of iron. | 18His bones are tubes of bronze, his limbs like bars of iron. |
| 19It is a prime example of God’s handiwork, and only its Creator can threaten it. | 19“He is the first of the works of God; let him who made him bring near his sword! |
| 20The mountains offer it their best food, where all the wild animals play. | 20For the mountains yield food for him where all the wild beasts play. |
| 21It lies under the lotus plants, hidden by the reeds in the marsh. | 21Under the lotus plants he lies, in the shelter of the reeds and in the marsh. |
| 22The lotus plants give it shade among the willows beside the stream. | 22For his shade the lotus trees cover him; the willows of the brook surround him. |
| 23It is not disturbed by the raging river, not concerned when the swelling Jordan rushes around it. | 23Behold, if the river is turbulent he is not frightened; he is confident though Jordan rushes against his mouth. |
| 24No one can catch it off guard or put a ring in its nose and lead it away. | 24Can one take him by his eyes, or pierce his nose with a snare? |
