Nahum 2
NLT Parallel ISV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
New Living TranslationInternational Standard Version
Your enemy is coming to crush you, Nineveh. Man the ramparts! Watch the roads! Prepare your defenses! Call out your forces!1 You are being attacked by advancing forces! Guard your rampart! Watch your roads! Prepare yourselves! Marshall your defenses!
Even though the destroyer has destroyed Judah, the LORD will restore its honor. Israel’s vine has been stripped of branches, but he will restore its splendor.2For the LORD will restore the glory of Jacob, just as he will restore the glory of Israel, although plunderers have devastated them, vandalizing their vine branches.
Shields flash red in the sunlight! See the scarlet uniforms of the valiant troops! Watch as their glittering chariots move into position, with a forest of spears waving above them.3The shields deployed by Israel's elite forces are scarlet, their valiant men are clothed in crimson. When they are prepared, the polished armament on their chariots will shine, and lances will be brandished about ferociously.
The chariots race recklessly along the streets and rush wildly through the squares. They flash like firelight and move as swiftly as lightning.4Their chariots storm through the streets, jostling each other along broad avenues. They look like torches, as they dart around like lightning.
The king shouts to his officers; they stumble in their haste, rushing to the walls to set up their defenses.5He will remember to summon his finest troops. They will stumble on their way, hurrying over to Nineveh's wall. Their defensive shield is in place.
The river gates have been torn open! The palace is about to collapse!6The river gates will be opened, and the palace will collapse.
Nineveh’s exile has been decreed, and all the servant girls mourn its capture. They moan like doves and beat their breasts in sorrow.7It has been determined: The woman is unveiled and sent away, her servant girls mourn. Beating their breasts, they whimper like doves.
Nineveh is like a leaking water reservoir! The people are slipping away. “Stop, stop!” someone shouts, but no one even looks back.8Nineveh is a reservoir whose water is draining away. "Wait! Wait!" they cry, yet not even one person looks back.
Loot the silver! Plunder the gold! There’s no end to Nineveh’s treasures— its vast, uncounted wealth.9Take the silver! Take the gold! There is no end to the treasure— fabulous riches of every imagination.
Soon the city is plundered, empty, and ruined. Hearts melt and knees shake. The people stand aghast, their faces pale and trembling.10Nineveh is devastated, deserted, and desolate. Her heart melts, her knees knock. Every stomach is upset, every face grows pale.
Where now is that great Nineveh, that den filled with young lions? It was a place where people—like lions and their cubs— walked freely and without fear.11Where is this lion's den? Where is the place where the young lions fed, where the lion and its mate walked with their young, the place where they feared nothing?
The lion tore up meat for his cubs and strangled prey for his mate. He filled his den with prey, his caverns with his plunder.12This lion renders its prey to pieces to feed its whelps, and strangles enough prey for its mate, filling its lairs with prey and its dens with rendered flesh.
“I am your enemy!” says the LORD of Heaven’s Armies. “Your chariots will soon go up in smoke. Your young men will be killed in battle. Never again will you plunder conquered nations. The voices of your proud messengers will be heard no more.”13"I am against you," declares the LORD of the Heavenly Armies, "and I will send your chariots up in smoke. A sword will devour your young lions, I will eliminate your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers will no longer be heard."
