New Living Translation | International Standard Version |
O LORD, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. | 1LORD, you have examined me; you have known me. |
You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I’m far away. | 2You know when I rest and when I am active. You understand what I am thinking when I am distant from you. |
You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do. | 3You scrutinize my life and my rest; you are familiar with all of my ways. |
You know what I am going to say even before I say it, LORD. | 4Even before I have formed a word with my tongue, you, LORD, know it completely! |
You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head. | 5You encircle me from back to front, placing your hand upon me. |
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand! | 6Knowledge like this is too amazing for me. It is beyond my reach, and I cannot fathom it. |
I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence! | 7Where can I flee from your spirit? Or where will I run from your presence? |
If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave, you are there. | 8If I rise to heaven, there you are! If I lay down with the dead, there you are! |
If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the farthest oceans, | 9If I take wings with the dawn and settle down on the western horizon |
even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me. | 10your hand will guide me there, too, while your right hand keeps a firm grip on me. |
I could ask the darkness to hide me and the light around me to become night— | 11If I say, "Darkness will surely conceal me, and the light around me will become night," |
but even in darkness I cannot hide from you. To you the night shines as bright as day. Darkness and light are the same to you. | 12even darkness isn't dark to you, darkness and light are the same to you. |
You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. | 13It was you who formed my internal organs, fashioning me within my mother's womb. |
Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it. | 14I praise you, because you are fearful and wondrous! Your work is wonderful, and I am fully aware of it. |
You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. | 15My frame was not hidden from you while I was being crafted in a hidden place, knit together in the depths of the earth. |
You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed. | 16Your eyes looked upon my embryo, and everything was recorded in your book. The days scheduled for my formation were inscribed, even though not one of them had come yet. |
How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered! | 17How deep are your thoughts, God! How great is their number! |
I can’t even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand! And when I wake up, you are still with me! | 18Were I to count them, they would number more than the sand. When I awake, I will be with you. |
O God, if only you would destroy the wicked! Get out of my life, you murderers! | 19God, if only you would execute the wicked, so that the men guilty of bloodshed would get away from me, |
They blaspheme you; your enemies misuse your name. | 20who speak against you with evil motives, your enemies who are acting in vain. |
O LORD, shouldn’t I hate those who hate you? Shouldn’t I despise those who oppose you? | 21I hate those who hate you, LORD, do I not? I loathe those who rebel against you, do I not ? |
Yes, I hate them with total hatred, for your enemies are my enemies. | 22With consummate hatred I hate them; I consider them my enemies. |
Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. | 23Examine me, God, and know my mind, test me, and know my thoughts. |
Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life. | 24See if there is any offensive tendency in me, and lead me in the eternal way. |
