Then Paul left Athens and went to Corinth.1After these things Paul departed from Athens, and came to Corinth;
There he became acquainted with a Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, who had recently arrived from Italy with his wife, Priscilla. They had left Italy when Claudius Caesar deported all Jews from Rome.2And found a certain Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, lately come from Italy, with his wife Priscilla; (because that Claudius had commanded all Jews to depart from Rome:) and came unto them.
Paul lived and worked with them, for they were tentmakers just as he was.3And because he was of the same craft, he abode with them, and wrought: for by their occupation they were tentmakers.
Each Sabbath found Paul at the synagogue, trying to convince the Jews and Greeks alike.4And he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks.
And after Silas and Timothy came down from Macedonia, Paul spent all his time preaching the word. He testified to the Jews that Jesus was the Messiah.5And when Silas and Timotheus were come from Macedonia, Paul was pressed in the spirit, and testified to the Jews that Jesus was Christ.
But when they opposed and insulted him, Paul shook the dust from his clothes and said, “Your blood is upon your own heads—I am innocent. From now on I will go preach to the Gentiles.”6And when they opposed themselves, and blasphemed, he shook his raiment, and said unto them, Your blood be upon your own heads; I am clean: from henceforth I will go unto the Gentiles.
Then he left and went to the home of Titius Justus, a Gentile who worshiped God and lived next door to the synagogue.7And he departed thence, and entered into a certain man's house, named Justus, one that worshipped God, whose house joined hard to the synagogue.
Crispus, the leader of the synagogue, and everyone in his household believed in the Lord. Many others in Corinth also heard Paul, became believers, and were baptized.8And Crispus, the chief ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord with all his house; and many of the Corinthians hearing believed, and were baptized.
One night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision and told him, “Don’t be afraid! Speak out! Don’t be silent!9Then spake the Lord to Paul in the night by a vision, Be not afraid, but speak, and hold not thy peace:
For I am with you, and no one will attack and harm you, for many people in this city belong to me.”10For I am with thee, and no man shall set on thee to hurt thee: for I have much people in this city.
So Paul stayed there for the next year and a half, teaching the word of God.11And he continued there a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them.
But when Gallio became governor of Achaia, some Jews rose up together against Paul and brought him before the governor for judgment.12And when Gallio was the deputy of Achaia, the Jews made insurrection with one accord against Paul, and brought him to the judgment seat,
They accused Paul of “persuading people to worship God in ways that are contrary to our law.”13Saying, This fellow persuadeth men to worship God contrary to the law.
But just as Paul started to make his defense, Gallio turned to Paul’s accusers and said, “Listen, you Jews, if this were a case involving some wrongdoing or a serious crime, I would have a reason to accept your case.14And when Paul was now about to open his mouth, Gallio said unto the Jews, If it were a matter of wrong or wicked lewdness, O ye Jews, reason would that I should bear with you:
But since it is merely a question of words and names and your Jewish law, take care of it yourselves. I refuse to judge such matters.”15But if it be a question of words and names, and of your law, look ye to it; for I will be no judge of such matters.
And he threw them out of the courtroom.16And he drave them from the judgment seat.
The crowd then grabbed Sosthenes, the leader of the synagogue, and beat him right there in the courtroom. But Gallio paid no attention. Paul Returns to Antioch of Syria17Then all the Greeks took Sosthenes, the chief ruler of the synagogue, and beat him before the judgment seat. And Gallio cared for none of those things.
Paul stayed in Corinth for some time after that, then said good-bye to the brothers and sisters and went to nearby Cenchrea. There he shaved his head according to Jewish custom, marking the end of a vow. Then he set sail for Syria, taking Priscilla and Aquila with him.18And Paul after this tarried there yet a good while, and then took his leave of the brethren, and sailed thence into Syria, and with him Priscilla and Aquila; having shorn his head in Cenchrea: for he had a vow.
They stopped first at the port of Ephesus, where Paul left the others behind. While he was there, he went to the synagogue to reason with the Jews.19And he came to Ephesus, and left them there: but he himself entered into the synagogue, and reasoned with the Jews.
They asked him to stay longer, but he declined.20When they desired him to tarry longer time with them, he consented not;
As he left, however, he said, “I will come back later, God willing.” Then he set sail from Ephesus.21But bade them farewell, saying, I must by all means keep this feast that cometh in Jerusalem: but I will return again unto you, if God will. And he sailed from Ephesus.
The next stop was at the port of Caesarea. From there he went up and visited the church at Jerusalem and then went back to Antioch.22And when he had landed at Caesarea, and gone up, and saluted the church, he went down to Antioch.
After spending some time in Antioch, Paul went back through Galatia and Phrygia, visiting and strengthening all the believers. Apollos Instructed at Ephesus23And after he had spent some time there, he departed, and went over all the country of Galatia and Phrygia in order, strengthening all the disciples.
Meanwhile, a Jew named Apollos, an eloquent speaker who knew the Scriptures well, had arrived in Ephesus from Alexandria in Egypt.24And a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man, and mighty in the scriptures, came to Ephesus.
He had been taught the way of the Lord, and he taught others about Jesus with an enthusiastic spirit and with accuracy. However, he knew only about John’s baptism.25This man was instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in the spirit, he spake and taught diligently the things of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John.
When Priscilla and Aquila heard him preaching boldly in the synagogue, they took him aside and explained the way of God even more accurately.26And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue: whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly.
Apollos had been thinking about going to Achaia, and the brothers and sisters in Ephesus encouraged him to go. They wrote to the believers in Achaia, asking them to welcome him. When he arrived there, he proved to be of great benefit to those who, by God’s grace, had believed.27And when he was disposed to pass into Achaia, the brethren wrote, exhorting the disciples to receive him: who, when he was come, helped them much which had believed through grace:
He refuted the Jews with powerful arguments in public debate. Using the Scriptures, he explained to them that Jesus was the Messiah.28For he mightily convinced the Jews, and that publickly, shewing by the scriptures that Jesus was Christ.
