New Living Translation | New American Standard Bible 1995 |
“If a man’s testicles are crushed or his penis is cut off, he may not be admitted to the assembly of the LORD. | 1"No one who is emasculated or has his male organ cut off shall enter the assembly of the LORD. |
“If a person is illegitimate by birth, neither he nor his descendants for ten generations may be admitted to the assembly of the LORD. | 2"No one of illegitimate birth shall enter the assembly of the LORD; none of his descendants, even to the tenth generation, shall enter the assembly of the LORD. |
“No Ammonite or Moabite or any of their descendants for ten generations may be admitted to the assembly of the LORD. | 3"No Ammonite or Moabite shall enter the assembly of the LORD; none of their descendants, even to the tenth generation, shall ever enter the assembly of the LORD, |
These nations did not welcome you with food and water when you came out of Egypt. Instead, they hired Balaam son of Beor from Pethor in distant Aram-naharaim to curse you. | 4because they did not meet you with food and water on the way when you came out of Egypt, and because they hired against you Balaam the son of Beor from Pethor of Mesopotamia, to curse you. |
But the LORD your God refused to listen to Balaam. He turned the intended curse into a blessing because the LORD your God loves you. | 5"Nevertheless, the LORD your God was not willing to listen to Balaam, but the LORD your God turned the curse into a blessing for you because the LORD your God loves you. |
As long as you live, you must never promote the welfare and prosperity of the Ammonites or Moabites. | 6"You shall never seek their peace or their prosperity all your days. |
“Do not detest the Edomites or the Egyptians, because the Edomites are your relatives and you lived as foreigners among the Egyptians. | 7"You shall not detest an Edomite, for he is your brother; you shall not detest an Egyptian, because you were an alien in his land. |
The third generation of Edomites and Egyptians may enter the assembly of the LORD. Miscellaneous Regulations | 8"The sons of the third generation who are born to them may enter the assembly of the LORD. |
“When you go to war against your enemies, be sure to stay away from anything that is impure. | 9"When you go out as an army against your enemies, you shall keep yourself from every evil thing. |
“Any man who becomes ceremonially defiled because of a nocturnal emission must leave the camp and stay away all day. | 10"If there is among you any man who is unclean because of a nocturnal emission, then he must go outside the camp; he may not reenter the camp. |
Toward evening he must bathe himself, and at sunset he may return to the camp. | 11"But it shall be when evening approaches, he shall bathe himself with water, and at sundown he may reenter the camp. |
“You must have a designated area outside the camp where you can go to relieve yourself. | 12"You shall also have a place outside the camp and go out there, |
Each of you must have a spade as part of your equipment. Whenever you relieve yourself, dig a hole with the spade and cover the excrement. | 13and you shall have a spade among your tools, and it shall be when you sit down outside, you shall dig with it and shall turn to cover up your excrement. |
The camp must be holy, for the LORD your God moves around in your camp to protect you and to defeat your enemies. He must not see any shameful thing among you, or he will turn away from you. | 14"Since the LORD your God walks in the midst of your camp to deliver you and to defeat your enemies before you, therefore your camp must be holy; and He must not see anything indecent among you or He will turn away from you. |
“If slaves should escape from their masters and take refuge with you, you must not hand them over to their masters. | 15"You shall not hand over to his master a slave who has escaped from his master to you. |
Let them live among you in any town they choose, and do not oppress them. | 16"He shall live with you in your midst, in the place which he shall choose in one of your towns where it pleases him; you shall not mistreat him. |
“No Israelite, whether man or woman, may become a temple prostitute. | 17"None of the daughters of Israel shall be a cult prostitute, nor shall any of the sons of Israel be a cult prostitute. |
When you are bringing an offering to fulfill a vow, you must not bring to the house of the LORD your God any offering from the earnings of a prostitute, whether a man or a woman, for both are detestable to the LORD your God. | 18"You shall not bring the hire of a harlot or the wages of a dog into the house of the LORD your God for any votive offering, for both of these are an abomination to the LORD your God. |
“Do not charge interest on the loans you make to a fellow Israelite, whether you loan money, or food, or anything else. | 19"You shall not charge interest to your countrymen: interest on money, food, or anything that may be loaned at interest. |
You may charge interest to foreigners, but you may not charge interest to Israelites, so that the LORD your God may bless you in everything you do in the land you are about to enter and occupy. | 20"You may charge interest to a foreigner, but to your countrymen you shall not charge interest, so that the LORD your God may bless you in all that you undertake in the land which you are about to enter to possess. |
“When you make a vow to the LORD your God, be prompt in fulfilling whatever you promised him. For the LORD your God demands that you promptly fulfill all your vows, or you will be guilty of sin. | 21"When you make a vow to the LORD your God, you shall not delay to pay it, for it would be sin in you, and the LORD your God will surely require it of you. |
However, it is not a sin to refrain from making a vow. | 22"However, if you refrain from vowing, it would not be sin in you. |
But once you have voluntarily made a vow, be careful to fulfill your promise to the LORD your God. | 23"You shall be careful to perform what goes out from your lips, just as you have voluntarily vowed to the LORD your God, what you have promised. |
“When you enter your neighbor’s vineyard, you may eat your fill of grapes, but you must not carry any away in a basket. | 24"When you enter your neighbor's vineyard, then you may eat grapes until you are fully satisfied, but you shall not put any in your basket. |
And when you enter your neighbor’s field of grain, you may pluck the heads of grain with your hand, but you must not harvest it with a sickle. | 25"When you enter your neighbor's standing grain, then you may pluck the heads with your hand, but you shall not wield a sickle in your neighbor's standing grain. |
