New Living Translation | NET Bible |
Moses called all the people of Israel together and said, “Listen carefully, Israel. Hear the decrees and regulations I am giving you today, so you may learn them and obey them! | 1Then Moses called all the people of Israel together and said to them: "Listen, Israel, to the statutes and ordinances that I am about to deliver to you today; learn them and be careful to keep them! |
“The LORD our God made a covenant with us at Mount Sinai. | 2The LORD our God made a covenant with us at Horeb. |
The LORD did not make this covenant with our ancestors, but with all of us who are alive today. | 3He did not make this covenant with our ancestors but with us, we who are here today, all of us living now. |
At the mountain the LORD spoke to you face to face from the heart of the fire. | 4The LORD spoke face to face with you at the mountain, from the middle of the fire. |
I stood as an intermediary between you and the LORD, for you were afraid of the fire and did not want to approach the mountain. He spoke to me, and I passed his words on to you. This is what he said: | 5(I was standing between the LORD and you at that time to reveal to you the message of the LORD, because you were afraid of the fire and would not go up the mountain.) He said: |
“I am the LORD your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt, the place of your slavery. | 6"I am the LORD your God, he who brought you from the land of Egypt, from the place of slavery. |
“You must not have any other god but me. | 7You must not have any other gods besides me. |
“You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind, or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea. | 8You must not make for yourself an image of anything in heaven above, on earth below, or in the waters beneath. |
You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected—even children in the third and fourth generations of those who reject me. | 9You must not worship or serve them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God. I punish the sons, grandsons, and great-grandsons for the sin of the fathers who reject me, |
But I lavish unfailing love for a thousand generations on those who love me and obey my commands. | 10but I show covenant faithfulness to the thousands who choose me and keep my commandments. |
“You must not misuse the name of the LORD your God. The LORD will not let you go unpunished if you misuse his name. | 11You must not make use of the name of the LORD your God for worthless purposes, for the LORD will not exonerate anyone who abuses his name that way. |
“Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy, as the LORD your God has commanded you. | 12Be careful to observe the Sabbath day just as the LORD your God has commanded you. |
You have six days each week for your ordinary work, | 13You are to work and do all your tasks in six days, |
but the seventh day is a Sabbath day of rest dedicated to the LORD your God. On that day no one in your household may do any work. This includes you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, your oxen and donkeys and other livestock, and any foreigners living among you. All your male and female servants must rest as you do. | 14but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. On that day you must not do any work, you, your son, your daughter, your male slave, your female slave, your ox, your donkey, any other animal, or the foreigner who lives with you, so that your male and female slaves, like yourself, may have rest. |
Remember that you were once slaves in Egypt, but the LORD your God brought you out with his strong hand and powerful arm. That is why the LORD your God has commanded you to rest on the Sabbath day. | 15Recall that you were slaves in the land of Egypt and that the LORD your God brought you out of there by strength and power. That is why the LORD your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day. |
“Honor your father and mother, as the LORD your God commanded you. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the LORD your God is giving you. | 16Honor your father and your mother just as the LORD your God has commanded you to do, so that your days may be extended and that it may go well with you in the land that he is about to give you. |
“You must not murder. | 17You must not murder. |
“You must not commit adultery. | 18You must not commit adultery. |
“You must not steal. | 19You must not steal. |
“You must not testify falsely against your neighbor. | 20You must not offer false testimony against another. |
“You must not covet your neighbor’s wife. You must not covet your neighbor’s house or land, male or female servant, ox or donkey, or anything else that belongs to your neighbor. | 21You must not desire another man's wife, nor should you crave his house, his field, his male and female servants, his ox, his donkey, or anything else he owns." |
“The LORD spoke these words to all of you assembled there at the foot of the mountain. He spoke with a loud voice from the heart of the fire, surrounded by clouds and deep darkness. This was all he said at that time, and he wrote his words on two stone tablets and gave them to me. | 22The LORD said these things to your entire assembly at the mountain from the middle of the fire, the cloud, and the darkness with a loud voice, and that was all he said. Then he inscribed the words on two stone tablets and gave them to me. |
“But when you heard the voice from the heart of the darkness, while the mountain was blazing with fire, all your tribal leaders and elders came to me. | 23Then, when you heard the voice from the midst of the darkness while the mountain was ablaze, all your tribal leaders and elders approached me. |
They said, ‘Look, the LORD our God has shown us his glory and greatness, and we have heard his voice from the heart of the fire. Today we have seen that God can speak to us humans, and yet we live! | 24You said, "The LORD our God has shown us his great glory and we have heard him speak from the middle of the fire. It is now clear to us that God can speak to human beings and they can keep on living. |
But now, why should we risk death again? If the LORD our God speaks to us again, we will certainly die and be consumed by this awesome fire. | 25But now, why should we die, because this intense fire will consume us! If we keep hearing the voice of the LORD our God we will die! |
Can any living thing hear the voice of the living God from the heart of the fire as we did and yet survive? | 26Who is there from the entire human race who has heard the voice of the living God speaking from the middle of the fire as we have, and has lived? |
Go yourself and listen to what the LORD our God says. Then come and tell us everything he tells you, and we will listen and obey.’ | 27You go near so that you can hear everything the LORD our God is saying and then you can tell us whatever he says to you; then we will pay attention and do it." |
“The LORD heard the request you made to me. And he said, ‘I have heard what the people said to you, and they are right. | 28When the LORD heard you speaking to me, he said to me, "I have heard what these people have said to you--they have spoken well. |
Oh, that they would always have hearts like this, that they might fear me and obey all my commands! If they did, they and their descendants would prosper forever. | 29If only it would really be their desire to fear me and obey all my commandments in the future, so that it may go well with them and their descendants forever. |
Go and tell them, “Return to your tents.” | 30Go and tell them, 'Return to your tents!' |
But you stand here with me so I can give you all my commands, decrees, and regulations. You must teach them to the people so they can obey them in the land I am giving them as their possession.’” | 31But as for you, remain here with me so I can declare to you all the commandments, statutes, and ordinances that you are to teach them, so that they can carry them out in the land I am about to give them." |
So Moses told the people, “You must be careful to obey all the commands of the LORD your God, following his instructions in every detail. | 32Be careful, therefore, to do exactly what the LORD your God has commanded you; do not turn right or left! |
Stay on the path that the LORD your God has commanded you to follow. Then you will live long and prosperous lives in the land you are about to enter and occupy. | 33Walk just as he has commanded you so that you may live, that it may go well with you, and that you may live long in the land you are going to possess. |
