8 Produce fruit, then, in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father. For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. Bear fruits in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham. Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to <i>our</i> father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. Therefore produce fruits that are consistent with repentance, and do not start saying to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham <i>as our</i> father,’ for I say to you that from these stones God is able to raise up children for Abraham. Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.
9 The axe lies ready at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.” And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. But indeed the axe is already being laid at the root of the trees; so every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.” The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”
10 The crowds asked him, “What then should we do? And the crowds asked him, “What then shall we do?” And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then? And the crowds were questioning him, saying, “Then what are we to do?” “What should we do then?” the crowd asked.
11 John replied, “Whoever has two tunics should share with him who has none, and whoever has food should do the same. And he answered them, “Whoever has two tunics is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise.” He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise. And he would answer and say to them, “The one who has two tunics is to share with the one who has none; and the one who has food is to do likewise.” John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.”
12 Even tax collectors came to be baptized. “Teacher, they asked, “what should we do? Tax collectors also came to be baptized and said to him, “Teacher, what shall we do?” Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do? Now even tax collectors came to be baptized, and they said to him, “Teacher, what are we to do?” Even tax collectors came to be baptized. “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?”
13 “Collect no more than you are authorized, he answered. And he said to them, “Collect no more than you are authorized to do.” And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you. And he said to them, “Collect no more than what you have been ordered to.” “Don’t collect any more than you are required to,” he told them.
14 Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do? “Do not take money by force or false accusation, he said. “ Be content with your wages. Soldiers also asked him, “And we, what shall we do?” And he said to them, “Do not extort money from anyone by threats or by false accusation, and be content with your wages.” And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse <i>any</i> falsely; and be content with your wages. And soldiers also were questioning him, saying, “What are we to do, we as well?” And he said to them, “Do not extort money from anyone, nor harass <i>anyone,</i> and be content with your wages.” Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?” He replied, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely—be content with your pay.”
15 The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John could be the Christ. As the people were in expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Christ, And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not; Now while the people were in a state of expectation and they all were thinking carefully in their hearts about John, whether he himself perhaps was the Christ, The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Messiah.
16 John answered all of them: “I baptize you with water, but One more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. John answered them all, saying, “I baptize you with water, but he who is mightier than I is coming, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. John answered, saying unto <i>them</i> all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire: John responded to them all, saying, “As for me, I baptize you with water; but He is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to untie the straps of His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
17 His winnowing fork is in His hand to clear His threshing floor and to gather the wheat into His barn; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire. 19 But when he rebuked Herod the tetrarch regarding his brother’s wife Herodias and all the evils he had done, But Herod the tetrarch, who had been reproved by him for Herodias, his brother’s wife, and for all the evil things that Herod had done, But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done, But when Herod the tetrarch was reprimanded by him regarding Herodias, his brother’s wife, and regarding all the evil things which Herod had done, But when John rebuked Herod the tetrarch because of his marriage to Herodias, his brother’s wife, and all the other evil things he had done,
