Apply Moses' humility in leadership?
How can we apply Moses' example of humility in our leadership roles?

The Moment of Transition

“Then Moses went out and spoke these words to all Israel:” (Deuteronomy 31:1)

What Humility Looks Like in Moses

• Accepted God’s timetable—“The LORD has said to me, ‘You shall not cross the Jordan.’” (Deuteronomy 31:2)

• Publicly affirmed Joshua—“Be strong and courageous, for you shall go with this people…” (Deuteronomy 31:7)

• Refused self-promotion even after forty years of leadership (cf. Numbers 12:3).

• Centered attention on the LORD, not on personal legacy—“It is the LORD your God who goes before you.” (Deuteronomy 31:8)

Principles for Today’s Leaders

1. Recognize Finite Limits

– Moses acknowledged age and physical limitation.

– Application: Step back when God signals; resist clinging to position.

2. Elevate Successors

– He laid hands on Joshua (Deuteronomy 34:9).

– Application: Train, encourage, and publicly bless emerging leaders.

3. Redirect Praise to God

– Repeatedly pointed Israel to the LORD’s faithfulness.

– Application: In victories, speak first of what God has done (cf. 1 Corinthians 10:31).

4. Lead with Quiet Confidence

Numbers 12:3 calls Moses “very humble, more than any man on the face of the earth.”

– Application: Let God defend your reputation; avoid self-justification.

5. Serve to the End

– Moses delivered final words and a song (Deuteronomy 32), finishing his assignment.

– Application: Stay engaged until God releases you, then release gladly.

Supporting Scriptures

John 3:30—“He must increase; I must decrease.”

Philippians 2:3–4—“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or empty pride…”

1 Peter 5:5—“Clothe yourselves with humility toward one another.”

Matthew 20:26–28—Greatness measured by serving.

Practical Steps This Week

– Audit motives: list where recognition matters more than obedience.

– Celebrate someone else’s achievement publicly.

– Seek counsel on areas where limits are showing.

– Hand off one responsibility to a developing leader.

– Thank God aloud for every success before you thank people.

The Outcome of Humble Leadership

Deuteronomy 34:10 testifies, “Since then, no prophet has risen in Israel like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face”. God exalts the humble; He did it for Moses, and He will honor leaders who follow the same path today.

How does Deuteronomy 31:1 connect with God's promises in Joshua 1:5?
