Apply godly counsel daily: how?
How can we apply the lesson of seeking godly counsel in our daily lives?

the moment at the crossroads (Judges 19:11)

“When they were near Jebus and the day was almost gone, the servant said to his master, ‘Come, please, let us turn aside into this city of the Jebusites and spend the night in it.’”

what happens when counsel is ignored

- The Levite chose familiarity over the servant’s cautious suggestion, pressing on to Gibeah—an Israelite town that seemed safer.

- The night ended in horrific sin and national outrage (vv. 22-30), showing that ignoring timely advice can lead to needless heartbreak.

why godly counsel remains essential

- Safety: “Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.” (Proverbs 11:14)

- Clarity: “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.” (Proverbs 15:22)

- Humility: Seeking advice admits we don’t see every angle (Proverbs 13:10).

- Accountability: Wise friends help us resist hidden sins (Hebrews 3:13).

scripture’s map of wise advisors

- Scripture itself: “Your testimonies are my delight and my counselors.” (Psalm 119:24)

- Mature believers: Jethro to Moses (Exodus 18), the elders to Rehoboam (1 Kings 12), Barnabas to Saul (Acts 9).

- The gathered church: Acts 15 models group discernment.

- The Spirit’s prompting through prayerful believers (James 1:5).

building a counsel-seeking lifestyle

- Keep a short list of trusted, Bible-anchored mentors—pastor, elder, seasoned friend.

- Bring decisions early, not after you’ve already made up your mind.

- Invite questions, not just affirmation; “What am I missing?”

- Compare every piece of advice with clear scriptural teaching.

- Pray together before concluding; unity in prayer sharpens perspective.

- Follow through and report back—accountability turns advice into growth.

testing the advice you hear

- Does it align with clear biblical commands or principles?

- Does it exalt Christ and promote holiness (2 Timothy 3:16-17)?

- Is it confirmed by multiple godly voices, not just one person?

- Does it produce peace, not pressure (Colossians 3:15)?

- Will it help you love God and neighbor more (Matthew 22:37-39)?

encouragement for the journey

- Every crossroad is an invitation to lean on the wisdom God provides through His Word and His people.

- Seeking counsel is not weakness; it is courageous dependence that steers us away from the tragedy of Judges 19 and into the safety promised in Proverbs.

- Make it a habit, and you’ll find that godly advice becomes a steady companion, guiding daily steps and guarding lifelong paths.
