How can we apply David's trust in God when facing opposition? Seeing the Scene “God, arrogant men rise up against me; a band of ruthless men seek my life— with no regard for You.” (Psalm 86:14) David is not exaggerating. Literal enemies plot murder; he records the threat just as it is. Yet in the very next breath (v. 15) he rests in God’s compassion. His example shows how raw honesty about opposition can coexist with unwavering trust. Remember Who God Is David’s confidence flows from a settled view of God’s character. • Psalm 86:15: “But You, O Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion and faithfulness.” • Exodus 34:6 is echoed word-for-word, anchoring David’s hope in God’s self-revelation. • Psalm 56:3–4 adds, “When I am afraid, I will trust in You… In God I trust; I will not be afraid.” Application: When opposition looms, rehearse God’s attributes aloud. Truth about Him steadies the heart before the threat changes. Choose Prayer over Panic Notice David’s pattern in Psalm 86: 1. He states the problem (v. 14). 2. He immediately turns it into prayer (vv. 1–7, 16–17). • Philippians 4:6–7 mirrors this: “Do not be anxious…but in everything, by prayer… present your requests to God.” Practical step: Translate each fear-filled thought into a sentence that begins, “Lord, because You are…, I ask….” Lean on Past Faithfulness • Psalm 86:13: “For great is Your loving devotion to me; You have delivered me from the depths of Sheol.” David recalls earlier rescues, building present courage. • 1 Samuel 17:37 records him doing the same before facing Goliath. Practice: Keep a written record of God’s past interventions. Review it when new adversaries appear. Stand on Promises, Not Circumstances • Romans 8:31: “If God is for us, who can be against us?” • 2 Timothy 4:18 shows Paul echoing David: “The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed.” Action list: – Memorize key verses about God’s protection (Psalm 91:1–4; Isaiah 41:10). – Speak them when criticism, injustice, or hostility surfaces. Walk in Integrity While You Wait David does not retaliate; he appeals for God’s vindication (Psalm 86:17). • 1 Peter 2:23 points to Christ, “When He suffered, He did not threaten, but entrusted Himself to Him who judges justly.” Application: Refuse shortcuts or revenge. Trust God to defend your reputation in His time. Worship Fuels Courage • Psalm 86:12: “I will praise You, O Lord my God, with all my heart; I will glorify Your name forever.” Singing truth redirects focus from attackers to the Almighty. Suggested habit: Begin each day with a worship song drawn from the Psalms before confronting opposition-related tasks. Live Expectantly Because Scripture’s record is accurate and literal, every promise David grasped is still ours. Opposition is real, but the Lord’s presence is more real. Face resistance with: • A mind fixed on God’s nature, • Lips that pray instead of panic, • Eyes remembering past deliverance, • A heart anchored in promises, • Hands committed to integrity, • And a voice lifted in worship. |
