How can we apply Jesus' response to our pursuit of righteousness today? Understanding the Encounter Luke 18:18 records, “A certain ruler asked Him, ‘Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?’”. Jesus’ ensuing response (vv. 19-22) uncovers the heart of true righteousness. Today, His words guide our own pursuit of a life that pleases God. Recognize God as the Only Source of Goodness • Jesus replied, “Why do you call Me good? … No one is good except God alone” (v. 19). • Application: – Begin every pursuit of righteousness with humble acknowledgement that goodness originates in God, not us (James 1:17). – Guard against self-righteous comparisons; measure everything against God’s perfect holiness (Isaiah 6:3). Move Beyond External Obedience • Jesus lists commandments (vv. 20-21), and the ruler claims to keep them. • Application: – Examine motives as well as actions (Hebrews 4:12). – Invite the Spirit to reveal hidden sin beneath respectable behavior (Psalm 139:23-24). – Remember Romans 3:23: “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”. Identify and Surrender Our Idols • “You still lack one thing. Sell all you have …” (v. 22). • Application: – Ask: what competes with Christ for my trust, security, or affection—possessions, reputation, relationships, comfort? (1 John 2:15-17). – Treat every rival as the ruler’s riches: something to release rather than protect. – Replace idols with deeper reliance on Jesus (Philippians 3:7-8). Practice Generous Stewardship • “Give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven” (v. 22). • Application: – View resources as tools for kingdom compassion (2 Corinthians 9:6-8). – Schedule regular, cheerful giving that stretches faith. – Invest time and talents, not just money, for eternal returns (Matthew 6:19-21). Follow Jesus Daily • “Then come, follow Me” (v. 22). • Application: – Make obedience relational, walking with Christ through Scripture and prayer (John 15:4-5). – Let His commandments direct every sphere—home, work, community (Colossians 3:17). – Embrace discipleship costs, trusting the surpassing worth of knowing Him (Luke 9:23). Depend on Divine Possibility • Jesus later affirms, “What is impossible with man is possible with God” (v. 27). • Application: – Rely on the Spirit’s power to transform desires and empower obedience (Galatians 5:16-25). – Approach setbacks with faith that God completes what He begins (Philippians 1:6). Living It Out Today • Celebrate God’s perfect goodness as the standard. • Examine not just deeds but desires. • Detect and discard any idol that dilutes devotion. • Give generously, trusting heavenly reward. • Walk in daily, relational obedience to Christ. • Depend wholly on God’s enabling grace. Pursuing righteousness this way keeps the spotlight on Jesus, who alone secures eternal life and shapes us into His likeness. |
