Applying divine inheritance spiritually?
How can we apply the concept of divine inheritance in our spiritual lives?

Setting the Scene

“Goshen, Holon, and Giloh—eleven cities with their villages.” (Joshua 15:51)

This single verse sits in a long list describing Judah’s territory. Nothing seems flashy—just names and numbers. Yet the list is preserved word-for-word because God literally delivered on His covenant promise to give Israel the land (Genesis 15:18; Joshua 21:45). Every boundary, hill, and hamlet mattered to Him—and still speaks to us about divine inheritance today.

Seeing Divine Inheritance in Joshua 15:51

• God names actual places. Inheritance is concrete, not vague.

• The allocation is detailed. No tribe—or city—was overlooked.

• “With their villages” reminds us that inheritance includes everything needed for life and growth, not mere empty acreage (Deuteronomy 6:10–12).

Principles for Today

Recognize Your Assigned Portion

• In Christ we have “obtained an inheritance” (Ephesians 1:11).

• As surely as Judah received Goshen, Holon, and Giloh, believers receive forgiveness, the indwelling Spirit, spiritual gifts, and eternal life (Colossians 1:12; 2 Peter 1:3–4).

• No part of that package is accidental; all was deliberately purchased at the cross.

Move In and Occupy

• Judah had to settle the land; we must “take possession” of our spiritual blessings.

– Feed on Scripture daily (Psalm 119:111).

– Pray confidently, knowing we approach as heirs (Hebrews 4:16).

– Serve using the gifts God has staked out for us (1 Peter 4:10).

Guard the Gift

• Cities needed walls; our inheritance calls for vigilance.

– Resist compromise (1 Corinthians 6:19–20).

– Reject teaching that diminishes Christ’s finished work (Galatians 1:6–9).

Celebrate Community

• The verse lists three cities within a larger total—eleven—hinting at shared identity.

• We inherit together: “fellow heirs, members of the same body” (Ephesians 3:6).

• Invest in local fellowship, bearing one another’s burdens (Galatians 6:2).

Anticipate the Ultimate Fulfillment

• Earthly allocations pointed forward to “an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, reserved in heaven for you” (1 Peter 1:4).

• Our present enjoyment is a down payment, guaranteed by the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13–14).

• Live with hope, knowing the best portion is yet to be revealed when Christ returns (Romans 8:17–18).

Putting It All Together

Like Goshen, Holon, and Giloh, every promise God makes is specific, reliable, and meant to be experienced. Identify what He has granted you in Christ, step into it, protect it, share it, and let it fuel anticipation of the eternal city “whose architect and builder is God” (Hebrews 11:10).
