Avoid profaning God's name today?
How can Christians avoid profaning God's name in modern speech and actions?

Opening the Text

Leviticus 19:12: “You shall not swear by My name falsely, and so profane the name of your God. I am the LORD.”

What Does It Mean to Profane God’s Name?

• To treat His name as common, empty, or untrue

• To misrepresent His character by our words or lifestyles

• To attach God’s authority to promises or statements we don’t intend to keep

• To live inconsistently, causing others to think lightly of Him (Romans 2:23-24)

Guarding Our Speech

• Eliminate casual exclamations that use “God,” “Christ,” or “Jesus” as fillers (Exodus 20:7)

• Refuse to “swear to God” in everyday pledges—let your “Yes” be yes (James 5:12)

• Speak truthfully; exaggeration and half-truths drag His name through the mud when we claim to follow Him (Ephesians 4:25)

• Replace profanity with praise and thanksgiving (Ephesians 4:29; Colossians 3:17)

Honoring God’s Name in Daily Actions

• Integrity in business, school, and family life—keeping vows and contracts (Numbers 30:2)

• Consistent holiness so critics have nothing legitimate to accuse (1 Peter 2:12)

• Serving and loving others in Christ’s name, displaying His goodness (Matthew 5:16)

• Submitting every choice—entertainment, social media, finances—to the question, “Does this glorify Him?” (1 Corinthians 10:31)

Practical Steps to Cultivate Reverence

• Meditate on biblical passages that exalt His name (Psalm 8:1; Matthew 6:9)

• Keep a journal of ways He has proven faithful; gratitude fuels respect

• Memorize key verses against misuse (Exodus 20:7; Leviticus 19:12; James 5:12)

• Invite accountability—ask trusted believers to point out careless words or behavior

• Model thoughtful speech for children and new believers, teaching them the weight of God’s name

Living as Witnesses to His Name

When our words match our deeds and both align with Scripture, onlookers see the reality of the God we serve. By honoring His name deliberately—speaking truth, keeping promises, and walking in holiness—we fulfill Leviticus 19:12 and lead others to revere the Lord who is worthy of all honor.

In what ways can we ensure our oaths honor God in daily life?
