Barriers to answering Christ's call?
What barriers might prevent us from responding to Christ's call in our lives?

Hearing the Knock—Song of Solomon 5:2

“I was asleep, but my heart was awake. A voice was knocking: ‘Open to Me, my sister, My darling, My dove, My flawless one. My head is drenched with dew, My hair with the damp of the night.’”

Recognizing the Picture

In Solomon’s poem the beloved hesitates while the bridegroom patiently calls. The scene mirrors Christ’s gentle but urgent invitation (Revelation 3:20). What keeps us from leaping up to open the door?

Barriers That Bolted the Door Then—and Now

• Spiritual drowsiness

– Content to “sleep,” we sense His voice only faintly.

– Compare Matthew 26:40–41; the disciples’ sleep cost them alertness in prayer.

• Self-satisfied comfort

– The bride lingers in bed rather than rise into the cool, inconvenient night.

Luke 12:19–21 warns how ease numbs awareness of the true agenda of God.

• Fear of inconvenience or cost

– Getting up means cold floors, soiled feet (Songs 5:3).

Luke 9:57–62 shows would-be followers delaying for lesser priorities.

• Preoccupation with lesser loves

– Hearts already full cannot respond wholeheartedly.

1 John 2:15–17 exposes how love for the world squeezes out love for the Father.

• Wounded emotions and trust issues

– Past disappointments can whisper, “Don’t open again.”

Psalm 34:18 reminds us the Lord is near the brokenhearted; refusing His nearness prolongs the wound.

• Shame over personal sin

– Hiding keeps the door shut (Genesis 3:10).

1 John 1:9 promises cleansing when we step into the light.

• Unbelief in His good intentions

– Doubting the Lover’s goodness breeds hesitation.

Hebrews 11:6: “without faith it is impossible to please God.”

Consequences of Delay

• Missed intimacy (Songs 5:6)

• Frantic searching that could have been restful fellowship (Songs 5:7)

• Discipline or loss of opportunity (Hebrews 12:25)

Keys to Swing the Door Wide

• Stay spiritually awake—daily Word and prayer keep the heart alert (Psalm 119:147).

• Cultivate readiness—live uncluttered, like lamps trimmed and burning (Matthew 25:1–13).

• Trust His character—remember Romans 8:32; He withholds no good thing.

• Act immediately—obedience at once prevents regret (James 1:22).

Christ still knocks in the night watches. The sooner the latch is lifted, the sooner fellowship fills the room.
