Boaz's kindness: God's character, provision?
What does Boaz's kindness reveal about God's character and provision?

Ruth 2:20

“May he be blessed by the LORD,” Naomi said to her daughter-in-law. “He has not forsaken His kindness to the living and the dead.” And she added, “That man is our close relative; he is one of our kinsman-redeemers.”

Boaz’s kindness is a window into God’s heart and hand. Here’s what comes into view:

God’s Covenant Kindness Shines through Human Hands

• Boaz practices ḥesed—steadfast love—which Naomi immediately traces back to the LORD.

Exodus 34:6 calls God “abounding in loving devotion”; Boaz becomes a living echo of that description.

Isaiah 54:10 promises God’s covenant of peace will never be shaken; Boaz’s action shows such love is already at work on the ground.

Provision That Meets Needs Today—and Sets Up Tomorrow

• Daily bread: Boaz makes sure Ruth gathers plenty (Ruth 2:15–17). Compare Matthew 6:33—seek Him; He provides.

• Safety and dignity: He orders young men not to touch her (Ruth 2:9). Psalm 91:11, “He will command His angels concerning you,” finds a human parallel in Boaz’s protection.

• Future security: As “kinsman-redeemer” (Leviticus 25:25; Deuteronomy 25:5–10), Boaz opens the door to restore Naomi’s family line—pointing ahead to God’s ultimate redemption plan.

A Glimpse of the Coming Redeemer

• Boaz’s role foreshadows Christ, our greater Kinsman (Hebrews 2:11–15).

• Just as Boaz covers Ruth with the corner of his garment (Ruth 3:9), Jesus covers us with His righteousness (Isaiah 61:10).

• Boaz pays the price to redeem land and lineage (Ruth 4:9–10); Jesus pays with His blood to redeem sinners (1 Peter 1:18–19).

God’s Character Revealed

• Faithful—He keeps covenant love alive across generations (Psalm 100:5).

• Compassionate—He sees widows, foreigners, the marginalized (Deuteronomy 10:18; James 1:27).

• Sovereign—Orchestrating “chance” meetings (Ruth 2:3) for eternal purposes (Romans 8:28).

• Generous—Far beyond bare minimum gleanings, He loads our baskets (Psalm 23:5; Ephesians 3:20).

Living It Out

• Expect God’s providence in ordinary fields; He delights to surprise His people with grace.

• Extend tangible kindness—especially toward the vulnerable—as evidence that God’s love is still active through His people (Galatians 6:10).

• Rest in the Redeemer: Boaz’s story proves God already had a plan for Ruth and Naomi; Christ guarantees one for us (John 14:1–3).
